39 thousand electric cars sold in Turkey in 9 months

According to data from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), total sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles in Turkey reached 857 thousand 575 units in the January-September 2023 period, an increase of 64.8 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

Automobile sales in the same period increased by 67 percent to 666 thousand 890 units, while light commercial vehicle sales increased by 57.2 percent to 190 thousand 685 units.

GASOLINE CARS MAINTAIN LEADERSHIP

In the Turkish automobile market, gasoline cars ranked first in the first 9 months of this year with 448 thousand 152 units sold, while diesel cars ranked second with 102 thousand 184 units. Hybrid car sales reached 70 thousand 72 units, and LPG-powered car sales reached 7 thousand 431 units.

Electric car sales, at 39 thousand 51 units, continued to remain well above LPG-powered car sales. In the January-September period of last year, 4 thousand 56 electric cars had been sold.

862.8 PERCENT INCREASE IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES

Gasoline car sales increased by 60.6 percent, diesel car sales by 49.1 percent, and LPG-powered car sales by 9.8 percent in the first 9 months of this year compared to the same period in 2022.

During this period, hybrid car sales recorded an increase of 71.4 percent, and electric car sales recorded an increase of 862.8 percent.

SHARE OF ELECTRIC CARS CONTINUES TO RISE

The share of gasoline cars in total sales, which was 69.9 percent in January-September 2022, fell to 67.2 percent in the same period this year. During the same period, the share of diesel cars fell from 17.2 percent to 15.3 percent, and the share of LPG-powered cars fell from 1.7 percent to 1.1 percent.

While the share of electric cars in total sales in Turkey rose from 1 percent to 5.9 percent, the share of hybrid cars rose from 10.2 percent to 10.5 percent. When considered as electric and hybrid, 16.4 percent of the total market consisted of electrified vehicles.

On the other hand, many brands continue to offer their previously announced ambitious models for sale in the Turkish market throughout the year.
