Final days to renew old driver's licenses! Penalties await those who don't

Old-style driver's licenses are being replaced with the new-style licenses that began distribution on January 1, 2016. The transition period is nearing its end. Licenses belonging to citizens who do not renew them by July 31, 2025, will become invalid as of August 1.

According to data from the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs, 31 million 643 thousand people have applied for new licenses to date. However, 4 million 237 thousand people are still using old-style licenses. If these individuals do not complete the process by the deadline, they will both be unable to drive and be forced to pay high fees.

THE PRICE DIFFERENCE FOR LICENSE RENEWAL WILL BE 7,423 TL

Licenses can be renewed for only 15 TL for applications made until July 31. However, those who miss this date will have to pay 7 thousand 438 TL for a Class B driver's license. In other words, those who do not make their application on time will face an extra cost of 7 thousand 423 TL.

APPLICATION SURGE EXPECTED

Authorities advise citizens to complete their transactions as soon as possible to avoid potential appointment congestion in the final months. Applications are made through population directorates or by appointments obtained via Alo 199, nvi.gov.tr, and the mobile application.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR NEW-STYLE LICENSE

Citizens need to prepare the following documents for the license renewal process:

Old driver's license

15 TL application fee

Driver's health report

Biometric photo (taken within the last 6 months)

REGISTERED ADDRESS INFORMATION IN MERNIS

New licenses for those who have completed their application are sent to their addresses via PTT. During this process, it is possible to drive with a temporary driver's license.
