January record in the automotive market: Sales break records

The Turkish automotive and light commercial vehicle market recorded an impressive rise in the first month of 2026. Total sales, which increased by 9.77 percent compared to the same period last year, reached 75,362 units in January. This growth in automobiles and light commercial vehicles has boosted the hopes of industry representatives.

When compared to January of last year, automobile sales rose by 9.14 percent to 61,055 units, while light commercial vehicle sales were recorded at 14,307 units, an increase of 12.56 percent. These data show that demand is well above the January averages of the last ten years; the total market is 77 percent above the averages, and the automobile market is 84.8 percent above.

Looking at the segment analysis, it is observed that vehicles in the A, B, and C segments, which have lower tax rates, are preferred. These segments accounted for 83.7 percent of total sales in January. The C segment, in particular, maintained its leadership with 32,428 units sold, capturing a 53.1 percent share. In terms of body type, SUV models topped the list with 36,786 units and a 60.3 percent share. Sedan models followed the SUVs with a 21.2 percent share, and hatchback cars with an 18.3 percent share. Furthermore, approximately 97 out of every 100 customers who purchased a vehicle preferred an automatic transmission.

THE RISE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES CONTINUES

In evaluations based on engine type, although gasoline-powered cars lead with 26,671 units and a 43.7 percent market share, interest in hybrid and electric vehicles is constantly increasing. While hybrid cars accounted for 30.7 percent of sales, the share of electric cars rose to 18.5 percent. Specifically, sales of electric cars under 160 kW grew at a high rate of 87.4 percent compared to the previous year. This development signals that demand for electric vehicles will increase even further in the future.

Important details also stand out on the light commercial vehicle side. The most preferred body type in the market was the "van," which holds 73.7 percent of the segment with 10,538 units sold. Pickup models took second place with a 10.8 percent market share.

The automotive sector, which made a fast start to 2026, could set records throughout the year if this momentum continues.
