Mandatory winter tire requirement ends: Warning to drivers regarding summer tires
The mandatory winter tire period for intercity commercial vehicles across Turkey ended as of today, while experts issued important reminders to drivers regarding the use of tires suitable for the season.
The mandatory winter tire requirement, implemented in Turkey to increase life and property safety against winter conditions, began on November 15, 2025. As of April 15, 2026, the obligation to install winter tires, which was introduced especially for commercial vehicles engaged in intercity freight and passenger transport, has ended nationwide. For private vehicles, where the practice is recommended, changing tires is important for safe travel.
By law, the start and end dates of the winter tire application can be adjusted by governorates according to the weather and climate conditions of the provinces. Inspections are carried out through the joint efforts of the General Directorate of Security, the Gendarmerie General Command, the Ministry of Trade, and municipal inspection teams. Administrative fines are imposed on drivers who do not comply with the requirement.
Experts point out that winter tires are designed for temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius. Winter tires, which lead to results such as a significant decrease in road grip, negative effects on vehicle control, and an increase in fuel consumption during the summer months, wear out faster in the heat and cause a loss of efficiency. In addition, choosing inappropriate tires also harms the environment by increasing carbon emissions.
Using tires suitable for the season when winter tires are not required increases both driving safety and tire life.
PRICE RANGE FOR TIRE CHANGING
Tire changing fees vary according to rim size. While a fee of 1000 liras is charged for the removal and installation process for vehicles with 13 and 14-inch rims, this cost rises to 1250 liras for 15, 16, and 17-inch rims, and up to 1500 liras for 18-inch and larger rims. Similar prices are requested for tire hotel services for 4 tires.
EXPERT ADVICE ON CHOOSING TIRES
Aydın Erkoç, President of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Federation, recommended that drivers must consider seasonal conditions and the needs of their own vehicles when choosing tires. Emphasizing that tires are of critical importance for safety, Erkoç stated the following:
"Using tires suitable for the season is of great importance for reasons such as safe driving, fuel economy, performance, and tire life. As is known, one of the most important factors that cause accidents in a vehicle is the use of inappropriate tires. Tires that are not suitable for the season invite accidents. In the summer period, winter tires wear out and their lifespan shortens. For a safe and comfortable drive, winter tires should be preferred in winter and summer tires in summer."
In addition, Erkoç reminded that production dates must be checked when buying tires. He said that even if they have not been used, tires that have reached the end of their shelf life may lose their properties over time, their balance may be disrupted, and they may jeopardize safe driving.
