Penalties for those who do not renew their driver's licenses by the end of the year

The deadline for replacing old-style driver's licenses with the new-style licenses, which began being issued on January 1, 2016, ends on December 31, 2024. Citizens who renew their old-style driver's licenses by this date will be able to obtain their licenses at a discounted rate. Those who do not renew their documents by the end of the period will face penal sanctions.

6 MILLION 264 THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE NOT RENEWED THEIR DRIVER'S LICENSES

Kemal Kalkan, Head of the Personalization Department at the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs, stated in his announcement that 27 million 803 thousand people have applied for new-style driver's licenses at population offices to date.

Kalkan said, "The deadline for the renewal of old-style driver's licenses has been set as December 31, 2024, and as of today, there are 6 million 264 thousand citizens who have not yet renewed their driver's licenses."

PENAL SANCTIONS WILL BE APPLIED TO THOSE WHO DO NOT RENEW THEIR LICENSES

Stating that citizens can renew their driver's licenses for 15 liras until the end of the year, Kalkan continued as follows:

"The fee to be paid for the renewal of old-style driver's licenses has been set at 15 liras in the Highway Traffic Regulation. However, if driver's licenses are not renewed by December 31, 2024, citizens will not be able to benefit from the discounted rate in 2025. Furthermore, citizens will not be able to drive with old-style driver's licenses. Since the old-style driver's license will become invalid, our citizens will face the penal sanctions regulated in the Highway Traffic Law when they drive with these driver's licenses."

Kalkan provided the following information: "The 13-lira valuable paper fee can be paid through the Revenue Administration's website or contracted banks. The 2-lira foundation share can be paid at banks contracted with the Turkish Police Organization Strengthening Foundation. Most public banks accept the 15-lira fee as a single package payment."

Stating that the printing of new-style driver's licenses takes a maximum of 2 business days, Kalkan said, "Printing processes are completed and all shipments are delivered to PTT. PTT delivers within 1 day in 56 provincial centers, within 2 days in other provincial centers, and within 4 days in villages and districts."

Expressing that citizens should obtain a health report before coming to their appointments, Kalkan advised that documents be renewed as soon as possible due to the potential density at the end of the year.

DISCOUNTED RENEWAL OPPORTUNITY

Those who renew their old-style driver's licenses by December 31, 2024, can obtain their new-style driver's licenses by paying a total of 15 liras, consisting of a 13-lira valuable paper fee and a 2-lira foundation share. Driver's licenses not renewed within the specified period will become invalid, and those who apply after this date will not be able to benefit from this license renewal fee. The fees for 2025 will be determined by the Ministry of Finance.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Citizens who wish to renew their driver's licenses can make an appointment via the Alo 199 call center, the mobile application, or randevu.nvi.gov.tr and apply to population offices with the necessary documents. After the applications are completed, the driver's licenses are delivered to the applicants' addresses via PTT. During the driver's license application process, individuals can drive with a temporary driver's license. Officials emphasize that no fee is requested during the application process and that one should be careful against fake websites.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

The documents required for the driver's license renewal process include the old-style driver's license, a driver's health report, a biometric photograph, and a receipt showing that the application fee has been paid. The applicant must have an address registered in the Central Population Administration System (MERNIS).

Citizens must pay the 13-lira valuable paper fee and the 2-lira foundation share fee to tax office directorates or online through contracted banks.
