Tesla recalls 2 million vehicles
The electric car giant has recalled nearly all of its vehicles on the road in the U.S. to address a security vulnerability identified in its Autopilot system.
Tesla has recalled over 2 million of its vehicles in the United States (U.S.) after official authorities identified a security vulnerability in its Autopilot systems.
This figure corresponds to nearly all Tesla vehicles in the United States. The electric car giant, owned by renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk, will install additional safety measures in vehicles equipped with its advanced driver-assistance system.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had been investigating whether Tesla sufficiently ensures that drivers remain attentive while the vehicle is in Autopilot mode. In the filing regarding the recall, Tesla stated that the Autopilot software system "may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse and could increase the risk of a crash."
Ann Carlson, acting administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, stated during a hearing at the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday that "one of the things we found is that drivers are not always attentive when this system is engaged," noting that they decided to open an investigation in 2021 following reports of fatal accidents involving Autopilot use.
Tesla shares lose value
Following the news of the recall, shares of the world's most valuable automaker fell by 3 percent. While Tesla's Autopilot system allows vehicles to steer, accelerate, or brake within their lanes, the enhanced Autopilot system also enables lane changes.
Tesla stated that it does not agree with the findings of the federal agency responsible for traffic safety, but that it will provide updates including new alerts in addition to existing measures to further encourage drivers to adhere to their driving responsibilities while Autopilot is engaged. The company did not respond to a question regarding whether the recall would be extended outside the U.S. or if more detailed information would be provided about the new measures.
It is not yet clear whether Chinese authorities will issue a similar recall request. Officials in Germany have reported that they are investigating the matter.
