Volkswagen ends production of one of the most popular models among Turks: The end of an era

The Touran, which Volkswagen launched in 2003 and quickly became one of the leading models in the family car segment, has bid farewell to its production life with the final vehicle rolling off the assembly line. The last Touran, produced in Wolfsburg, Germany, on April 29, 2026, marked the turning of a new page in the brand's journey in the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) segment.

According to information provided by company officials, production of the Touran, which had been on sale with its second generation since 2015, officially ended at the end of April. Volkswagen stated that with the discontinuation of this model, they have no plans for any new internal combustion MPV models. The brand's strategic shift to focus on SUVs and electric vehicles has meant that no successor for the Touran is on the agenda.

During its approximately 24 years in production, the Touran achieved a sales success of 2.3 million units worldwide. Especially in the mid-2000s, it managed to become the segment leader in European and German markets, with annual sales figures exceeding 50 thousand. As a favorite for families with many children and users seeking a spacious interior, the model's departure symbolizes the closing of a major era.

It is stated that the intense global demand for SUV models and new safety regulations played a critical role in the termination of production. With consumer preferences shifting toward tall, spacious crossover vehicles, declines in sales for compact MPVs like the Touran had become inevitable.
