Behind the Scenes: Erdoğan and Bahçeli made a request to the Speaker of the Parliament! Will the Atalay ruling be read?

The General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) will resume its work on Tuesday, January 16, following a break for the new year. 

It is alleged that President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli have requested the Speaker of the Parliament to "have the judicial ruling regarding the revocation of Can Atalay's parliamentary membership read out."

The Court of Cassation, which decided not to comply with the AYM's ruling, had once again rejected the request for Atalay's release and sent a letter back to the TBMM for his parliamentary membership to be revoked.

WILL THE RULING BE READ?

Following the chamber's decision, Bahçeli stated, "We wholeheartedly congratulate the honorable judges of the Court of Cassation," while Chief Advisor to the President Mehmet Uçum also penned an article titled "The AYM is a compromised structure."

According to the report by Selda Güneysu from Cumhuriyet, it is stated that President Erdoğan and MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli have requested the Speaker of the Parliament to "have the judicial ruling regarding the revocation of Atalay's parliamentary membership read out."

However, Speaker of the Parliament Numan Kurtulmuş had previously taken a stance in favor of waiting for the judicial process to be completed in the face of opinions calling for the ruling to be read.
