Process debate in AKP corridors: Are Bahçeli's steps decisive?
The uncertainty surrounding the government's "Terror-Free Turkey" goal is increasing unease within the AKP. The fact that decisions regarding the process are being deferred to await statements from MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli is leading to criticism regarding a loss of initiative.
In AKP corridors, the pauses and uncertainties experienced in the progress of the opening process carried out under the title of "Terror-Free Turkey" continue to occupy the agenda. According to information obtained, there are serious concerns within the party regarding the future of the process.
The fact that the messages to be given by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli are awaited first for every decision to be taken regarding the process is causing unease in the AKP. In party corridors, assessments are being made that the government is hesitant to take critical steps and has therefore lost its initiative. This situation stands out as a slowdown and uncertainty in the government's policies.
According to some sources, the MIT and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs may take different positions from the political wing on some openings required by the process. Developments in Syria, in particular, and security concerns regarding the PKK's armed strength and inventory are causing the government to move slowly.
Within the AKP front, assessments are being made that, “Bahçeli’s stance on the process directly affects the shape of decisions regarding İmralı. First Bahçeli speaks, and then the government acts according to these statements. This routine creates serious discomfort within the party, and Bahçeli is expected to provide clues on every topic.”
On the other hand, on the DEM Party side, the slow progress of processes related to the execution or release of PKK convicts in prisons is a subject of complaint. It is reported that demands such as the right to hope, special legal regulations, and sentence reductions have not yet reached the relevant ministries and parliament.
In the evaluations made within the party, the possible reaction that may arise at the grassroots level is also shown as an important reservation. “It is not realistic to expect society to maneuver quickly after demonizing someone for a long time. It would be wrong to expect perceptions created over 40 years to change in a few weeks,” is an assessment also voiced among party members.
As a result, it is suggested that the evaluations coming from different institutions within the AKP regarding the process and the MHP's decisive position are creating serious pressure on the future of the process, and that the government is facing criticism of losing its initiative.
