In Turkey, almost one in every 2 people works for the minimum wage or wages very close to the minimum wage.

According to the report in Gazete Pencere, the AKP has made assessments ahead of the minimum wage negotiations that will begin on December 11. 

Although there are those within the AKP who state that a raise of at least 50 percent should be made, the probability of this happening is not seen as high. The possibility of this figure not being accepted by employers and the possibility of all balances being disrupted are being discussed.

THE 16 THOUSAND PLAN

AKP officials state that the increase in the minimum wage could remain around 40 percent and that it is highly likely to be set at 16 thousand liras. Furthermore, it is stated that there are demands for the 500 lira minimum wage support provided to employers to be increased and continued in 2024. It was stated that the government has not yet made a decision regarding this demand from employers. A legal regulation will need to be enacted for the support to continue.

OMNIBUS BILL MAY BE ON THE AGENDA

It is claimed that if a decision is made regarding the continuation of the minimum wage support and an increase in the lowest pension, a mini omnibus bill will come to the agenda after the new year and legislation will be enacted on both issues.
