Economic turmoil continues! Mondi decides to close its Gebze facility
Mondi Türkiye Oluklu Mukavva Kağıt ve Ambalaj Sanayi AŞ has announced that it will close its factory in Gebze, noting that some employees will have their employment contracts terminated, while others will be transferred to other facilities.
Mondi Türkiye, in a notification sent to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP), announced that it has decided to terminate operations at its corrugated cardboard production factory in the Gebze Organized Industrial Zone. As part of the decision, some of the factory's employees will be laid off, while those deemed suitable will be transferred to the sister factory located in İzmit.
In the statement made by the company, it was emphasized that the decision to close the factory was driven by current economic conditions, technological requirements, and the fact that operational efficiency had become unsustainable. It was further stated that this step was taken in line with strategic needs aimed at increasing the company's long-term competitiveness and efficiency.
Operations at the Gebze factory will be completely halted by March 31, 2026, at the latest. Mondi also stated that necessary measures have been taken to ensure that the process does not lead to any disruptions in customer service. The company management stated, “The sales volume of the factory to be closed represents a very low proportion compared to the total volume. Our production and delivery services at our other facilities are organized to fully meet the needs of our customers.”
While it was stated that some of the personnel will be transferred to the İzmit Factory based on their skills and job positions during the closure process, it was announced that there is no clear information yet regarding how many employees will be transferred or have their employment terminated. The company also added a note stating, “The public will be informed separately once the number of employees whose contracts will be terminated is finalized.”
Following this development, attention has turned to labor mobility in Gebze, one of the regions providing the highest employment in the manufacturing sector, and the potential impact of future decisions on employment.
