In the Netflix film Leave the World Behind, the scene where self-driving vehiclesall head toward the same point and, without any human intervention, crash into each other until they turn into a pile oftwisted metal was exactlysuch a scene.
Cinemarather than the tension created by it, seeing how an uncontrolled algorithmcan turn into a chain reaction of disasterhas triggered a fearthat has beendormant in my mindfor a long time.It has broughtthat almost silent fear to the surface. That scene opened a door: new fear loaded.
The fiction should have ended there; it didn't need to leak into real life. However, technology now blurs the line between fiction and reality.leaves no boundaries.
Not long after the unsettling feeling created by the film, news from Russia made that imaginary fear seem to take onfleshandbone.It was as if it had appeared. Hundreds of Porsches locked overnight... Drivers turn the ignition, the vehicle shows no response; the doorsdo not open.doesn'twork; screens go black. It was as if someone had remotely pressed a button and nationwide, had halted the presence of this brand.
The first statement from Rolf, the country's largest dealer, pointed to a signal-related technical malfunction.it was mentioning, but the small possibility it leftwithin the sentencemoved the issue to a completelydifferent place:
It is possible that this was doneintentionally.
Suddenly, fiction and reality becameintertwined. With what is happening in Russia, the scene from the film ceased to be a metaphor It emerged; a reality that illustrates just how fragile modern automobiles are has turned into a reality.
TAnatomy of Vulnerability
The source of the problem was Porsche's VTS satellitesecurity module. Under normal conditions, this system, which protects the vehicle against theft, assumes it is under attack when it loses the satellite signalandswitchesto full lock mode. As soon as a signal disruption occurredacross Russia, theHundreds of vehiclesshut themselves down simultaneously.
Panic grewrapidly. Somevehicleowners removed sensors, dismantled modules,and broke the bodywork to solve the problem. Luxurycars suddenly became unusablevandalized by their users turned into objects ofdespair. The words recorded on video by a mechanicamong the vehiclesfillingup the service centerssummarized the situation:
"There is a mass lockout of Porsches. They are all at service centers. Someof them have come to us as well. We will try to resolve theissue."

The blind spotof technology: KitKat
