2025 Report Card: Streaming Platforms in Turkey

Digital content platforms have become central to our lives. However, as a viewer, I no longer just ask the question, "What will I watch?" Questions like "Where will I watch it?", "How stable is the app?", "Are there subtitles?", and "Is there dubbing?" have become just as important as the content itself. In this article, I evaluate the streaming platforms active in Turkey based on my own observations, focusing on both content quality and user experience. I also provide a recommendation for content worth watching on each platform.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video is my preferred platform. While its interface can be complex at times, its content selection is truly high-quality. Works that stand out for their wit, such as "Fleabag," and gripping series like "Reacher" demonstrate Prime's quiet but deep strategy. Although the lack of subtitles can sometimes be frustrating, I believe it has the most solid stance in terms of content focus.

Netflix

Technically, Netflix is still by far the best-performing platform. The app is fast, intuitive, and glitch-free on both mobile and web. Its most significant advantage is that it provides Turkish dubbing for almost all of its content. Aside from the 8th season and beyond of "The Blacklist," there is almost no content without Turkish dubbing. I hope they close this gap soon as well. Content like "Love, Death & Robots" and the re-added "Dr. House" remain major assets.

TV+ (Turkcell)

I have been using TV+ for a long time. Technically, the app can have issues from time to time; its interface is dated and in need of an update. However, it is very successful on the content side. Almost all productions have Turkish dubbing, and there is plenty of content for children. Linear TV and offline viewing options are an added bonus. It could be ranked much higher if the interface were renewed.

TOD

TOD is an important platform, especially for sports fans. It has become indispensable for Formula 1 and football matches. However, I find its pricing policy to be quite expensive. Hosting HBO content is a major advantage, but the series and film side is still limited. It was thanks to this platform that I watched a production like "Chernobyl" for the first time. The app is not bad on mobile, but it is cumbersome on the web.

Max (formerly BluTV)

Max is the new face of the former BluTV, but I have not personally experienced it yet. I know that its content catalog has expanded since it came under the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella. Its consistency in local dramas comes from its past; productions like "Saygı" are examples of this strength. However, it would not be right for me to comment directly on the technical experience for now.

Gain

When Gain first launched, it promised a lot. Vertical content, short videos, a young target audience... However, it lost its direction over time. Still, it can produce work worth watching. "Ayak İşleri" is the best example of this. The app is simple, but content discovery is difficult; there is almost no algorithm. Some content is truly great, but it cannot be found.

Disney+

Disney+ entered Turkey with a large investment in local content but then quietly took a step back. It is very successful from a technical perspective; the interface is clean, fast, and stylish. But its content policy is inconsistent. "The Mandalorian" is still the platform's pride. However, it lacks a strategy to engage the local audience.

Exxen

Exxen is very crowded in terms of content, but the app cannot handle it. There are constant freezes and disconnections on both mobile and web. Its interface is behind the times. Despite this, it manages to keep its loyal audience with cult productions like "Gibi." It could reach a much better point if it improved its technical side as much as its content.

PuhuTV

PuhuTV is a platform that no longer produces new content but holds archival value. Its app is simple but outdated. Still, being able to watch a work like "Şahsiyet" for free is an important plus.

Conclusion: It's Not Just What I Watch, But Where I Watch That Matters

Streaming platforms now survive not just on content, but on experience. For me, Amazon Prime Video is at the top with its content selection. Netflix is a safe harbor with its technical excellence and the importance it places on the Turkish language. TV+ is above my expectations in terms of content; it could be much more ambitious if it fixes the technical side. TOD is strong with its sports content but expensive. I haven't experienced Max yet, but I assume it will continue the former BluTV line. I decide who I sit in front of the screen with based not just on the content, but on design, accessibility, language support, price, and streaming quality. Because now, it's not just what I watch, but where I watch that is just as important.
