The local elections are over.
The AKP and MHP suffered a major loss of votes. The CHP won in many places, and the Republicans achieved a great victory.
Since 2018, the AKP transitioned to a presidential system, and R. Tayyip Erdoğan, with the title of “Partisan President,” tied all state organs to himself and effectively rendered the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), where the will of the nation—that is, sovereignty—is reflected, insignificant. Under the name of “Presidential Decree,” whatever came out of his lips became “law.”
In other words, he consolidated a significant portion of the nation's sovereignty within himself. Under the name of a partisan presidency, the nation's right to sovereignty has been held by one person since 2018.
Well,
Did Atatürk foresee that this would happen? Of course, he did.
He stated that holding the nation's right to sovereignty partially or entirely in one's own hands would be a great disaster, and that our nation should “tear apart” those who drag the country into this disaster.
Exactly 100 years ago,
In 1923;
“It should not be forgotten that there are ignorant and naive people who benefit from holding the nation's right to sovereignty in one person or in the hands of a few. Rulers consider themselves representatives of an imaginary power and take pleasure in this. But the opportunists around them try to deceive the entire nation and drag it into darkness by giving this a religious appearance. Indeed, that is how it has been until now. Gradually, the nation's ear gets used to those words, and it mistakes the suggestions made for the truth itself. These people are called ‘reactionaries’ (mürteci) and their actions are called ‘reaction’ (irtica). If we examine our recent history, we will encounter many examples.
But the whole world should know that it is no longer possible to deceive and fool our nation with these suggestions. The place for those who want to lead the nation toward reaction through fatwas or this or that suggestion will be a dungeon. I say it clearly and without hesitation: those who want to record (take into their own hands) even a drop of our National Sovereignty in one way or another are the darkest reactionaries.
The thing for the nation to do against such people is to tear them apart.”
In other words, a person will emerge, one person will hold the nation's right to sovereignty, they will portray themselves as a representative of an imaginary power or their inner circle will grant them this title, some opportunistic members of parliament around them will say “touching him is an act of worship,” another will say “the city where he was born is sacred,” and the citizen will say “Allah is one, Tayyip is one,” effectively removing the prophet from the equation.
Didn't it happen like this?
It did.
In Atatürk's words, “Erdoğan was given a religious appearance, the nation's ear got used to those words, and some naive people mistook the suggestions made for the truth.”
All of this stems from the concentration of sovereignty in one person under the name of the “Presidential” system.
What happened next was again what Atatürk said would happen. He found it problematic for the president to be elected by the public. The Parliament should have elected them. Because tomorrow, the president could declare their sultanate or kingdom by saying “the people elected me.” In 2018, that is exactly what happened. The public elected the president, and in the end, he declared himself a one-man ruler.
And the result: The presidential system and disaster.
Atatürk has not been wrong to this day. He was not deceived either. He did not say things like “may the nation forgive me.” He was always right in his predictions. He will be proven right in this prediction as well. Have no doubt about it.
In the first general elections to be held, our nation will effectively tear apart at the ballot box those who have taken their right to sovereignty from them.
Do not worry. We will see beautiful days, children. Atatürk was not wrong.
He was never wrong.
We will sail our hopes into the blue.
