Erbilli Esat.

My tongue cannot bring itself to call him a scholar (hoca).

He was from the Khalidiyya branch of the Naqshbandi order. He was born in the Erbil district of Mosul. At the age of 23, he received training from the Khalidiyya sheikh Taha El Hariri. When his sheikh died, he came to Istanbul. He served as a muezzin at the Molla Pîrî Mosque in Çarşıkapı and as a hafiz at the Fatih Mosque. He spent his years in Istanbul in various mosques and dervish lodges (tekkes) with conversations and dhikr. Later, he became the sheikh of the Kelami Dervish Lodge, where he found the opportunity to address a wide circle. Once he gained a certain amount of power, he was exiled to his hometown of Erbil by Abdul Hamid II in 1900.

However, taking advantage of the atmosphere of freedom brought by the Second Constitutional Era, he returned to Istanbul in 1908. He returned to the Kelami Dervish Lodge and expanded it. With the Constitutional Era, he found the opportunity to work comfortably in the environment of constitutional rights and freedoms provided by the era, and he expanded his order.

In 1914, he was appointed to the Council of Sheikhs (Meclis-i Meşayıh), which managed the dervish lodges under the authority of the Sheikh ul-Islam, and became the president of this council.

He did not participate in the War of Independence or the National Struggle. He was busy with dhikr in Istanbul. For him, it did not matter if the Greeks won. He continued these activities even after the proclamation of the Republic.

While he was carrying out his activities at the Kelami Dervish Lodge in Istanbul, in May 1925, a parapsychologist named Carl Vett—who was also a British spy—came to the Kelami Dervish Lodge and stayed for 15 days.

During the same period, Carl Vett also visited the Mevlevi and Rifai dervish lodges and participated in their dhikr ceremonies. During his stay at the Kelami Dervish Lodge, Carl had the opportunity to meet and talk with Erbilli Esat frequently. He became close with him. As Erbilli Esat saw him off, he promised that he would gladly provide help if he ever needed it.

Erbilli Esat continued his activities until 1925, when the dervish lodges and zawiyas were closed. He wandered from one lodge to another. He fed on the ignorance of the people. But when the lodges were closed, he became unemployed. He had to leave the Kelami Dervish Lodge. He settled in his mansion in Kazasker, Erenköy.

But of course, Erbilli Esat did not remain idle. Together with his son, Ali Hoca, he began to carry out his activities secretly with the support of British spies. He was secretly meeting with the British Chief Spy Sait Molla, who had fled to Greece after the War of Independence.

It was in those years, on December 23, 1930, that a bigot named Dervish Mehmet appeared in Menemen, İzmir, and claiming to be the Mahdi, rebelled against the state along with his friends. Claiming that they had captured Istanbul and İzmir and that a caliphate army of 70 thousand people would soon arrive, he took the green flag at the Gazal Mosque and called the people to revolt. And he declared that he had proclaimed Sharia.

British spy Carl Vett was in Istanbul when the Menemen rebellion broke out. The authorities who received the news tasked a second lieutenant/teacher named Mustafa Fehmi Kubilay with suppressing the rebellion with his squad. Second Lieutenant Kubilay went to the scene, but he thought he would solve the problem by talking. He went to face the reactionaries alone and unarmed. However, the bigots shot him with rifles. The wounded Kubilay fled to the mosque courtyard. Dervish Mehmet, who chased after him, caught the wounded Kubilay and brutally murdered him by cutting his head from the nape with shouts of Sharia. And he committed this massacre with a dull pruning knife, and this murder lasted 13 minutes.

There is no conscience in a bigot. There is no mercy.

Because Dervish Mehmet, not content with cutting off his head, cupped and drank the blood of the wounded Kubilay. He paraded Kubilay's head on a pole through the streets of Menemen. The state officials, who immediately took action, suppressed the incident and neutralized the murderer Dervish Mehmet and his 6 friends. But it was in vain.

The young Republic had lost one of its teachers.

The reactionaries were hanged at the place where Kubilay was martyred.

The murderer was, of course, not limited to these individuals. In the investigation, Erbilli Esat from the Naqshbandi Order and his son Ali, also nicknamed "hoca," were found guilty and sentenced to death. His son was hanged, and Erbilli Esat was sentenced to death. But his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment due to his age.

The orders and communities were silenced and hidden in their black holes.

However, with the Democratic Party coming to power in 1950, the era suddenly changed. Under the name of democracy, dervishhood and reactionism were brought to the fore. The orders were revived again. The values and gains of the Republic were pushed into the background.

Erbilli Esat was from the Khalidiyya branch of the Naqshbandi Order. During the Democratic Party era, the Naqshi leader Said-i Nursi was also brought to the fore. And he was paraded around on election buses by Adnan Menderes.

It was as if revenge was being taken on the Republic and Kubilay.

During this period, every bigot who had rebelled against the state was practically resurrected. Erbilli Esat's grave was on a public plot in Menemen; during the Adnan Menderes era, this place was put up for sale and purchased by his disciples. Immediately afterwards, this plot was turned into a large tomb. In 1962-63, a mosque was also erected. It was named the Safa Mosque. This was not enough; the tomb was turned into a shrine in 2017. Erbilli Esat's mansion in Kozyatağı was also restored.

Today, in defiance of Kubilay, hundreds of the ignorant visit this grave as if it were a shrine, and unfortunately, it finds supporters. Do not be surprised if Erbilli Esat and his son are soon found innocent and given the title of "Restoration of Reputation."

Because in this country, every Sharia-supporter, destroyer, separatist, and reactionary now receives prestige. Erbilli Esat's Khalidiyya branch is also destructive. It directly trains supporters against the regime. It is very widespread in Northern Iraq and Syria, and it has laid its foundation in Turkey in the Norşin (Bitlis-Güroymak-Muş triangle) region. FETÖ's Said-i Nursi is from there. Sheikh Said, who besieged Diyarbakır and rebelled, is from that region. Hezbollah, which infiltrates the state today, has again emerged from that region.

This is not a coincidence.

Also, who were the ones who beheaded Kubilay?

Of course, it was not just Dervish Mehmet and his cronies. The ones who beheaded Kubilay were the Erbilli Esats, who were the heads of the Khalidiyya branch. Moreover, they were the ones who put the public grave site where Erbilli Esat was located up for sale in 1952.

For example, they were the ones who built a mosque there in 1962-63 and tried to give it sanctity. They were the ones who beheaded Kubilay.

Whoever turned Erbilli Esat's grave into a shrine in 2017 was the one.

Do you know who the ones who beheaded Kubilay are?

It was not just the orders and communities, but those who paved the way for them at the state level.
