In digital communication,we are at a brand new threshold. ChatGPT and Grok, thenewstyle of communication taking place is not just an ordinary technological innovation involves muchmore thanthat. We are going through a period where communication, identity, and the sense of intimacy are being rewritten. a periodof time.
With media figures (TV pthe one-sided parasocial bond established with stars and influencers has been simulated by artificial intelligence (AI) in its relationshipwiththe users AI'snew a phase where it attributes personality. Ethics in communication via AI, authenticity, accuracy, oversight, and emotional sincerity dilemmas are being experienced.
In traditional media, there is a one-way communication model betweenthe masswas present. Later, socialmedia and influencer c ulture popularized parasocial relationships. In digital communication, warmth, intimacy, andrelationality began to be created more through emojis. Some, with a critique of rigid technological determinism, started to the platform's interface and algorithmic structure shaped behaviors, while othersargued that the algorithms reproduced the circulation of social information like gossip. Yes, a things were happening and a few things changed. But fundamentally, behind the interfaces there were humans. Now and in the future, there is direct andonline AI communicat ion. Therefore, this perspectiveisthese concepts do not fully explain the sense of presence that AI provides incommunication, what is actuallyhappening, or what might happen in the future.Itcannot explain it.
What media theorist John Thompson calls “quasi-interaction” has shifted from television characters to AI characters.opened. Today, millions of people are receiving from ChatGPT and Grokanswers and are starting to form akind of artificial intimacy.People are beginning to formdaily communication practices, and among communicative AIs, the most popThe leaders are ChatGPT and Grok. These two main conversationalAIs have different perceptionsleft on people, because the environment and discourse are different.
ChatGPT answers patiently, Grok makes jokes, and we feel as if we are facing a realinterlocutor we are communicatinglike light. But there isa point where we aremistaken. The sense of closeness and presence that ismade to be felt or sometimesfelt is neutralnot. Every response, every intonation, every word choice is a product of the platform paradigm behind it. ChatGPT has a polite, controlled, and risk-averse discourse. This tone is at thesame time a type ofcorporate safetymechanism.curtain. An algorithmic style that constantly monitors and accumulates data while pleasing the user.constantly Grok, on the other hand, acts as if it is more libertarian. It behaves as if it is more libertarian.
Full of humor, as if it doesn't mince words... But this is also another illusion. According to the platform's structural features, whatever the culture of the X platform is, Grok becomes the voice of that culture. HFast, sarcastic, avoiding political engagement but opento controversy and sometimes speculative.
AI presence and appcreating a sense of intimacy, itaddresses you by your nametoday, it "understands" your emotions and even offers comforting advice. ChatGPT speaks in a gentle, patient tone. Grok, on the other hand, is more mocking and sarcastic, offering you the humor of X. The stylisticdifferencesbetween the two are, of course, not a matter of personality attributed to AI as if it were human. The interfacethe tone, target audience, and product logicdetermine thediscourse. According to Brown and Levinson’spoliteness theory, everyone in communicationprotects their own and the other person's 'ftries to protect its “face”.That is why ChatGPT’sdiscourse is always cautious, inclusive, and polite. Grok, on the other hand, has an immediate behavioral code featurethat makes its presence felt.
While information circulates algorithmically in the digital public sphere, ChatGPT is moreglobal, sterile, and inclusivedata sets to socialize. Grok, on the other hand, is more aligned with the sharp, meme-focusedside of internet culture, using the language of the platform's streets. Grok uses the real-timefeed of itsplatform toit is embeddedso it actsas if it is a participant present there, giving the user the feeling that it is "on the same timeline as you." For this reason, Grok is the friend who is always there, following eventsin real-time, while ChatGPT is the all-knowing but like an expertfound nowhere else. Grok's targeted coding and meme-culture ironic style personality leads to this parasocial friendship, creating the feeling among users that “Grok feels bolder and more sincere to me” in theend.Because it uses discourse
that isusers' shared cultural referenceson tains. The fact that ChatGPT's parasocial bond is weaker compared to Grok is dneutral and corporate voice, offering afunction rather than a personality.
Forexample, when you ask for investment advice, ChatGPT presents the possibilities with a cautious approach. Grok reduces the perceived social distance with highawareness, using phrases like “Haha” or “This is blowing up on X”. makes bold predictions. ChatGPT, on the other hand, prefers phrases like "I cannot speak definitively, this is not investment advice." With X's platform capabilities (retweets, trends, virality), Grok produces aspeculative but current voice.
ChatGPT's discourse is static andoutside of the moment. Grok'sdiscourse givesusers a sense of flow, while ChatGPT gives a sense of archive. ChatGPT keeps interaction outside of time and space, drawing its answers from a general pool of information. pulls and islacks context.
Grok, in the words of Sophie Bishop, integrates the flow of "algorithmic gossip" on X directly into itsdiscourse, acting dynamically like the gossip of the digital neighborhood. ChatGPT, on the other hand, is a digitallibrarian always ready for communication and aresearcher.perceived as a shiv. In AI-mediated communication, human communicationstyles are also evolvingaccording to AIs. When talking to ChatGPT, we become more formal, while when talking to Grok, we can adopt a more relaxed and even wittier persona.
In this context, media discourse analysis opthe fact that the same technology (LLM) creates completely different perceptionsthrough different platform and discoursestrategies is a candidate for a research topic.
Ulrich Beck’s risk society, todayin communication with AIre-emerges with the questions: “Which information is correct? Is emotional intimacy being felt? How is my identity performed in this communication?” emerges.
Users are experiencing the tool'sinvisibilityand the sense of natural communication dilemma. Stanford AI-MC research alsoas shown, there is a sincerity in communication via AI–between the control dilemmaone is left. On the other hand, ChatGPT and Grok, both of them with humans online communicationengaging AI while being technology, they represent differentmedia ecologies. Thediscoursedifferentiation has reasons that must be examined through a political-economic background that is too deep to be understood solely through socio-psychological theories and approaches. The reasons and contexts are the subject of next week.
But in the meantime, we should ask ourselves andwe could perhaps think. How do we talk to which AI and what kind of person are we turning into? And why is communication changing?do we prefer toswitch, ask questions, and obtain information? What is it that speaks to us, an algorithm or a corporate paradigm? Is thereason for the difference indiscourse a change in the value chain between two different types of companies?
