With the PKK's statement, Turkey has reached the threshold of a new and critical period. We already knew that Islamists, Kurdish nationalists, and those who voluntarily serve as lackeys to imperialism had an allergy to the Treaty of Lausanne; now, this has become crystal clear.

However, the stones for this path, along which the country is being rapidly dragged toward an Islamist-Kurdish federation, were not laid just recently.

Let us not go back as far as the Ubaidullah uprising in 1860, but it is worth remembering 12 years ago.

The year 2009...

Ömer Mirani, the Ankara Representative of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iraq, gives an interview to Neşe Düzel from the newspaper Taraf.

In those days, there is an "opening" on the agenda, just as there is now. A Kurdish conference is on the agenda.

Neşe Düzel asks, "What is the purpose of this conference?"

Ömer Mirani's answer is striking.

"The world has changed. The international system has changed. Now the Kurdish world and the Kurds must also change. In accordance with the needs of a changing world, the Kurds must now lay down their arms. The main topic of the conference will be the Kurds laying down their arms. Today, in the Kurdish world, there are two other armed organizations besides the PKK. One is PJAK, the PKK's branch in Iran, and the other is the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran. What these organizations should do after abandoning their weapons will be discussed."

Ömer Mirani later says that they are considering inviting the PKK to the conference, but that the organization itself will decide who to send, and adds:

"We will also invite the DTP, which is the political wing of the PKK and is currently represented in the Turkish parliament with 21 deputies, to the conference."

What more can the man say...!

Neşe Düzel wonders if a proposal package will be presented at the conference.

Ömer Mirani states that topics such as what the militants coming down from the mountains will face, how they will live, and what jobs they will do if the PKK lays down its arms are the main discussion topics of the conference, and says, "Also, the PKK's demands will be put forward."

Neşe Düzel this time asks about the steps Turkey needs to take.

Mirani lets the cat out of the bag:

"An amnesty should be declared. They should return to their homes. They should be able to exist in social life by being educated. Furthermore, the PKK is not just an organization of Kurds from Turkey. 20 percent of the militants in the mountains are Iranian. Some are Syrian and very few are Iraqi. Each country should take back its own citizens."

Shortly after this interview was published, the Firat News Agency announced that a delegation from the US State Department had met in Ankara with writer Orhan Miroğlu, KADEP Chairman Şerafettin Elçi, and former Hakkari Deputy Esad Canan to exchange views on the disarmament of the PKK and the Kurdish issue.

The news stated, "Turkish diplomats also accompanied the US delegation in the meetings held before US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's visit to Turkey last weekend... In the closed-door meetings, the US delegation received suggestions on 'disarmament of the PKK', 'general amnesty', and 'what democratic openings could be'."

In other words, the meal served to us today began cooking back then.

On May 20, the newspaper Bugün, another one of the mouthpieces of the Gülen community, would also write about the main outlines of the "opening".

Considering the Gülen community's connection to the CIA, it could be understood that there was an effort to build consent among the people of our country through the newspaper Bugün.

The news stated the following:

"The obstacles in front of the use of Kurdish will be removed. Following the restoration of Kurdish village names, the surprise of giving children Kurdish names will also come. Kurdish broadcasting on television will be completely liberalized. The ban on citizens in prisons speaking Kurdish on the phone will also be lifted with a regulation change to be made."

In a news report published in the newspaper Sabah on the same date, it was stated that the government planned to introduce a comprehensive amnesty for the PKK and that a rehabilitation program would be implemented for members of the terrorist organization other than the leadership cadre to return home.

Accordingly, it was envisaged that members of the organization who laid down their arms would be given a guarantee that they would not enter prison.

"According to the government plan, those who return will be provided with job and land opportunities. The same arrangement will be made for the leadership cadre of the organization. The leadership cadre will be provided with passage from northern Iraq to third countries in Europe; the government's plan also includes arrangements for the Mahmur camp under PKK control. Accordingly, the return of refugees in Mahmur to Turkey will be ensured. The UN will also be involved during the evacuation of the camp. Discussions on how the organization will lay down its arms will be addressed at the Turkey-US-Iraq tripartite mechanism meeting to be held on Tuesday. It is stated that leaving the organization's weapons to the Baghdad or US administration is among the suggestions. The plan will be presented to Prime Minister Erdoğan. Detailed studies will be carried out with the General Staff and judicial institutions."

Let us not say "history repeats itself," but there is almost no difference between the developments of that day and what is happening today.

Only some of the actors in the theater have changed.

Abdullah Öcalan was in the lead role then, just as he is now.

Tayyip Erdoğan hit the brakes back then. The parliamentary system was functioning, and he was aware that the political cost of this issue would be heavy.
