Yesterday, children were murdered in this country. Due to the well-known biased stance of the media, we tried to follow the developments on social media. However, the scene we encountered was not just painful, but an anger that made us ashamed of our humanity. We once again witnessed the extent to which the people of this country have become spiritually and morally ill.
While the pain of our children was still fresh, the disgusting effort displayed by those rushing to defend the government was astonishing. Excuses were manufactured, culprits were invented, and everyone was targeted; yet, not a single person among those managing the process was held accountable.
THE REASON FOR THE EXISTENCE OF PUBLIC AUTHORITY
The fundamental duty of the state is not to regulate what citizens should or should not believe, nor to interfere with beliefs. The primary reason for the state's existence is to guarantee the life, property, and rights of every individual. For example, a state's priority cannot be organizing a "Ramadan event." The indispensable duty of the state is to ensure the safety of children and all citizens. People accept the existence and law of a public authority precisely for this need for security.
WHAT IS THE MINISTRY'S REAL AGENDA?
Unfortunately, since Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin took office, it has not been our fortune to see him make a move related to his actual job, which is education. The public has always known him for his relationships with sects—or what he calls "NGOs"—his faith-oriented rhetoric, and Ramadan events in schools. If the honorable minister had focused his energy not on faith-related matters but on stopping the decay in education—that is, on the ministry itself—we could be talking about a much healthier and safer environment for our children today.
THE FUTURE IS BEING BURIED IN DARKNESS
Of course, this criticism is not limited to Yusuf Tekin; this is a call that must be made to all units of the government. Society is rapidly decaying. I call out to the government: Stop dividing society, stop tearing it apart by saying "us and them." As long as this politics of polarization continues, our future looks darker with each passing day.
A society that cannot protect its children will not be saved by any belief or ideology it tries to build upon.
