Security concerns in international tourism

We started this week with some very sad news. Three people were killed in a robbery-motivated shooting targeting a group of tourists on a safari in a rural area near the city of Tum in Ethiopia. Two of those who lost their lives in the shooting were Turkish businesspeople who were participating in the safari trip as tourists. The group's Ethiopian driver was also killed in the same incident. Two other Turks in the group managed to escape the attack at the last moment. The Turkish tourists who survived this tragic event stated that the tires of the safari vehicle carrying their two friends, the Turkish businesspeople who lost their lives, were hit, preventing them from escaping, and that this was done for a small amount of money and belongings. Turkey's Ambassador to Addis Ababa, Berk Baran, provided information regarding the contacts made by Ethiopian authorities and advised that it is beneficial for tourists to research the region they plan to visit before their travels, stating, "We are ready to provide the necessary guidance to our citizens who contact our Embassy for this purpose."

First and foremost, I would like to extend my condolences to the families of our citizens who lost their lives in the attack and wish a speedy recovery to those who survived. This tragic event has once again brought security concerns in international tourism to the agenda. The importance of travel safety in international tourism and its impact on tourist preferences have been highlighted once again. In particular, the effect of the perception of security on the travel decision-making process in outbound tourism and the reflections of global security risks on international tourism demand have become a subject of debate once more.

The Relationship Between Tourist Safety and Destination Image

Tourist safety is one of the most important factors directly affecting a destination's image among international and local visitors. When choosing their destinations, travelers consider how safe they will feel just as much as natural beauty, cultural heritage, and price advantages. Negative factors related to security, such as terrorism, natural disasters, crime rates, and health risks, can rapidly damage a destination's image. Conversely, strong security measures, effective crisis management, and transparent information policies shape tourists' perceptions of a destination in a positive way, increasing its desirability. Investments in tourist safety should be evaluated not just as short-term protective measures, but as a strategic element in terms of a destination's brand value and sustainable tourism development.

Perception of International Travel Safety in the Post-Pandemic Era

It is possible to examine the perception of international travel safety under two main headings: pre-pandemic and post-pandemic. We see that in the pre-pandemic period, the perception was shaped more by geopolitical tensions increasing on a global scale and climate-related disasters. During this period, travelers closely evaluated the political stability, crime rates, and emergency response capacity of the country they were visiting.

We see that this perception has undergone a significant transformation after the pandemic. This process strongly incorporated health risks into the concept of security that influences tourists' travel decisions. While factors such as terrorism, crime rates, and political instability were at the forefront before the pandemic, hygiene standards, health infrastructure, and emergency management became the primary determinants with the pandemic. This situation made it mandatory for countries and destinations to be perceived not only as safe but also as "health-reliable."

Another important factor shaping the perception of safety in international travel in the post-pandemic period has been the official regulations and communication policies implemented. Vaccine certificates, digital health passports, border controls, and travel insurance play a decisive role in how safe tourists feel, but criminal incidents, such as the painful event our citizens recently experienced, continue to shape this perception. For this reason, travelers' perceptions depend not only on objective risks but also on how these risks are managed and reflected to the public. Therefore, security is no longer just a precaution; it also stands out as one of the fundamental elements determining the competitiveness of destinations.

The Role of Smart Tourism Applications on Tourist Safety

The contribution of digital technologies to travel safety in international tourism is significant. Smart tourism applications play an important role in increasing tourist safety through the integration of digital technologies into the tourism sector. Mobile applications, smart maps, real-time warning systems, and location-based services allow tourists to receive instant information about potential risks in the destination they are in. In particular, the provision of emergency notifications, quick access to health services, and safe transportation options through digital platforms contributes to tourists feeling safer. Tourists' social media posts, online reviews, and evaluations on travel platforms also directly affect the security image of destinations. With the impact of digitalization, social media, travel warnings, and instant news feeds cause the perception of destinations to be shaped rapidly, while even small changes in the perception of security can lead to serious fluctuations in tourism demand.

Travel Safety Management in Tourism Enterprises

Every destination to be traveled has dangerous places as well as safe areas accustomed to tourism. Beyond trips such as business, education, or sun-sea-sand vacations, I recommend that travelers planning to participate in experiential tours travel with specialized travel agencies that provide professional trip design instead of traveling individually.

"Professional Trip Design" could be the subject of another article in itself. Let's conclude our topic today on "travel safety management of tourism enterprises, specifically travel agencies."

Travel safety management in travel agencies operating in outbound tourism is a critical process aimed at minimizing the risks that tourists may encounter during journeys between different countries and cultures. Observing security criteria during stages such as visa procedures, transportation organization, accommodation selection, and guidance services is among the primary responsibilities of agencies. Furthermore, closely monitoring threats that vary at the international level, such as political instability, health risks, and natural disasters, makes it mandatory to provide accurate and up-to-date information to travelers. In this context, effective security management increases tourists' confidence in international travel and strengthens the institutional trust placed in agencies.

Moreover, travel safety management in outbound tourism agencies gains even more importance with technological infrastructure and crisis management competencies. Digital reservation systems, emergency contact lines, and travel insurance offer a protective framework against potential risks. The establishment of strong communication networks by agencies with their business partners abroad and the ability to intervene quickly in times of crisis ensure the sustainability of tourist safety. These approaches are important not only for preventing negative situations but also as a strategic element that increases the competitiveness and brand value of agencies in the international market.
