These days, thousands of young people are making their university choices. Some are trying to complete their applications for undergraduate programs, while others are doing so for master's or doctoral degrees. Universities are organizing promotional days, academics are explaining their departments, and students are touring campuses. Everyone has the same question in mind: How can I make the right decision?
Actually, this question is not just about education. We ask the same question when choosing a job, buying a house, making an investment, or even choosing a life partner. We want to avoid making mistakes.
Statistics, however, remind us of an interesting fact: It is impossible to make a decision in life with a zero margin of error.
The phrases "95 percent confidence level" and "plus or minus 1.5 percent margin of error" that we frequently hear in public opinion polls explain exactly this. Researchers say that the result they obtain is very close to the truth, but they never claim it is one hundred percent certain. Because science is more the art of managing uncertainty than of certainty.
Moreover, there is another interesting situation: As the confidence level increases, the margin of error also grows.
This sentence might sound counterintuitive at first glance. After all, one expects the margin of error to decrease when one is more confident. However, mathematics says the exact opposite. Because if you want to be 99% sure, you need to take into account a wider range of possible outcomes. Since you are covering more possibilities, your confidence interval widens.
The situation is no different in life.
If a student only looks at the question "do graduates find jobs immediately?" when choosing a university, it becomes easier to make a decision. But when they start thinking about "how is the academic staff, are the laboratories sufficient, are there international exchange programs, what is the cost of living in the city, is the alumni network strong, how are the master's degree opportunities?", the evaluation area expands. They gather more information and make a more informed decision, but at the same time, it becomes harder to make a definitive decision. They move away from certainty. As the confidence level increases, the feeling of uncertainty also grows.
A similar situation occurs in master's and doctoral applications. Some candidates apply to the first program they see and make their decisions quickly. Others examine dozens of universities, read the publications of advisors, compare laboratories, research scholarship opportunities, and examine the careers of graduates. It is clear that the second group has more information. However, it also takes them longer to make a decision. Because the number of possibilities they are evaluating has increased.
We encounter a similar situation even when shopping in daily life. Think about buying a new phone. If you only look at the price, your decision takes shape within a few minutes. However, when you start to examine criteria such as camera performance, processor, battery life, update support, service network, user reviews, and long-term durability one by one, the options multiply. Especially if what the people you value say about that phone contradicts what these criteria show, the uncertainty in your mind grows as you approach making a more accurate decision.
There is an important lesson to be learned here: Uncertainty is not always the result of ignorance. Sometimes, on the contrary, it is the natural result of having more information. Because as information increases, not only the answers but also the variables that need to be considered increase. This is what we are experiencing in today's multi-channel media. We are exposed to so much information that it becomes difficult for us to make decisions.
Statistics teach us not only numbers but also the nature of decision-making. Just as every research has a margin of error, the decisions in our lives also have an invisible margin of error. Waiting for the perfect decision often delays the act of deciding. Being able to take a step after reaching sufficient information, while accepting the remaining uncertainty, is one of the most important characteristics of both scientific thinking and healthy decision-making.
What we need to do is not to try to eliminate the margin of error completely, but to try to live by knowing, understanding, and learning to tolerate it. Because there is no one hundred percent certainty in statistics or in life. Despite this, being able to make rational choices within uncertainty is what makes it possible to make the right decisions.
