It is a metaphor everyone knows: When a frog is thrown into boiling water, it jumps out immediately, but if it is placed in lukewarm water and the water is heated slowly, it gets boiled.
Let's rewind the film… Let's go back to 2002. Go to any university chair, any street, any square you want and hold a microphone to the citizens.
Let's ask the citizens, within 22 years:
Turkey will abandon its homeland territory and the public will remain indifferent to this. What do you say? Could it happen?
Turkish islands in the Aegean will be occupied and the public will remain indifferent to this. What do you say? Could it happen?
The country's founding leaders will be insulted from parliamentary podiums and at official openings, these insults will go unprosecuted, and the public will remain indifferent to this. What do you say? Could it happen?
The country's forests will burn and the public will remain indifferent to this. What do you say? Could it happen?
The Republic of Turkey state will stir up events in its neighbors, host terrorists, and the public will remain indifferent to this. What do you say? Could it happen?
The Court of Cassation and the Grand National Assembly of Turkey will ignore Constitutional Court rulings, the rule of law will disappear, and the public will remain indifferent to this. What do you say? Could it happen?
Turkey will become a land of dirty money and drugs and the public will remain indifferent to this. What do you say? Could it happen?
Women will be murdered and the public will remain indifferent to this. What do you say? Could it happen?
Unfortunately, we could ask thousands of similar questions.
I think the citizen speaking into the microphone would say, "of course, it wouldn't happen."
However, all of them and much more have happened.
So, what will happen now? The water continues to heat up. What do you think won't happen?
Write down what you think won't happen on a piece of paper, put the paper in an envelope, and let's seal the envelope. Let's meet in 5 years. What do you say? Do you have the guts for that?
Anything can happen in this country. People get used to everything.
There is no sense of shame left, no law, no tradition, no code of conduct, no morality.
I wish patience to all citizens who believe that the Republic of Turkey is or can be a secular, social state governed by the rule of law.
Should we finally start getting out of the pot? What do you say?
