Thirty-one years ago, the Utopias Meeting began in Datça. Utopians discussed the past, present, and future of Turkey and the world. Influenced by the age of utopias, socialists and ecologists ignited an unprecedented fire. That fire continues to burn.
However, we are in a new era. Narratives and great aspirations are damaged. One cannot look to the future with confidence. At the same time, the value of truth has diminished. The greatest nonsense is mentioned alongside the most respected theories. We are in a new age of ignorance (Jahiliyyah). Ignorance is contagious; it is encroaching upon the lives of those who are not ignorant as well.
As systems and devices become "smart" and information increases, ignorance spreads. There were those among us who foresaw these dangers: Asimov, Orwell, Huxley, Zamyatin... The name for these predictions is: Dystopia. While describing the future through their dystopias, they were essentially criticizing our present.
Today, ignorance and stupidity surround our lives. We seek refuge from ignorance in the light. Just as in the oldest dark days of humanity, we gather around fire and light. This time, we are discussing dystopias and the darkness into which we have fallen.
We are meeting in Ayvalık on November 15-16, 2025, to discuss dystopias. We are among friends, at the table of the Sun.
