'We won't pay, we're not paying!'

The world wasn't like this back then. It was divided in two, like an apple. Or even three. The capitalist camp, the socialist camp, and the third world... In such an environment, different games were being written, and different dreams were being built. In 1974, a clever mind, Dario Fo, wrote a play: ''We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay!''

In this play by the genius of the Commedia dell'arte movement, the cat-and-mouse game between the public, who loot a supermarket and legitimize it, and the police is explored. The police are both of the people and against the people. As always, it is the people who both destroy and create.

The theme dominating the play is not new. The Qarmatians who raided the Hajj caravan, the Babai revolt in Anatolia, the plebeians in Rome, peasant uprisings in Europe, and the French Revolution... A similar theme emerges when the downtrodden say ''enough is enough.''

We are becoming impoverished. Some are winning. Most of all, banks and credit institutions... This contrast is visible on both a local and global scale. Those who provide loans to people who cannot pay are getting rich through interest. Then, bailiffs knock on the citizen's door.

According to what Doğruluk Payı has verified (https://www.dogrulukpayi.com/bulten/kredi-karti-borcunu-odeyemeyenlerin-sayisi-artiyor) and according to what the BDDK announced, ''As of October 4, 2024, banks' individual credit card receivables reached 1.63 trillion TL. In January 2023, this amount consisted of 558.8 billion TL in installment debts and 1.07 trillion TL in non-installment debts. While the increase in credit card receivables was recorded at 0.34 percent compared to the previous week, it reached 69.1 percent compared to the same week of the previous year (October 6, 2023 - 40th Week) and 1366 percent compared to the 40th week of 2019.''

The loss of value of money and the increase in the cost of living are at shocking levels. Of course, there are those who benefit from this process. The sin of those who do not encourage the public to produce and condemn them to a spiral of consumption is great. Those who benefit from this process are also under this burden. These monetary and financial policies encourage consumption, borrowing, and high-interest lending, not production.

So, what should we do? If the opposition hears what Dario Fo said, there is a way out. Turkey has paid enough money abroad, both through its private sector and as a state. Let it not pay, let us not pay anymore. The citizen has paid enough debt. Let them not pay, let us not pay. Whatever we have in our hands, let's spend it on production now. If there is time left from identity and seat squabbles, let the opposition hear this voice. Let those who eye the nurseries of municipalities providing public services and extra courses at universities in the name of austerity measures hear this voice. Let's shift savings to production. Let's protect the resources spent on emergency debt rollover instead of production. Let's postpone debts, restructure them, let's not pay.

As long as there is no production, our ability to borrow and pay debt also decreases. We struggle to pay debt interest and sink deeper into debt. The state must assert its own power and reshuffle the cards. If the cards are not reshuffled, this table will collapse. It is unclear who will be left underneath!
