Social Decay and Corruption in Turkey

In recent years, the increasing social decay and corruption in Turkey have become visible in many areas of social life. This erosion, occurring on economic, political, and cultural levels, has been made even more unbearable by the government's misguided policies. 

The severe contraction, high inflation, and unemployment rates recently experienced by the Turkish economy have caused significant impoverishment among the lower and middle segments of society.

The decline in trust in political institutions in Turkey is linked to the frequency of corruption and bribery allegations. Corruption scandals, particularly in municipalities and public institutions, demonstrate that the state mechanism is moving away from the principles of justice and transparency.

The problems in education are another indicator of Turkey's social decay. Constantly changing examination systems, inequality of opportunity, and poor-quality education diminish the youth's hopes for the future. Education should not only be a process of acquiring knowledge but also a field where values, ethical principles, and science are instilled.

While pressures on freedom of expression have increased in Turkey in recent years, double standards regarding who this freedom can be used against and for what purpose are becoming increasingly apparent.

Freedom of expression, which is under constitutional guarantee, includes the right of individuals to freely express their thoughts and engage in criticism. However, the implementation of this freedom in Turkey has recently been confined within certain boundaries, creating an environment where criminal sanctions are brought to the agenda, especially for individuals who criticize the government.

It clearly reveals the government's restrictive policies toward freedom of expression in Turkey and, in particular, its practices aimed at silencing government criticism. At the same time, such events demonstrate the government's attempts to silence any criticism that contradicts its own political agenda and interests.

It shows that restrictions on freedom of expression in Turkey are applied only to certain groups or individuals, while pro-government figures enjoy a wide area of freedom. While individuals who criticize the government or circles close to the government are quickly subjected to judicial processes, there is often no sanction when the same criticisms are directed at the government's opponents. An environment has been created in the media, on social platforms, or in public spaces where anti-government rhetoric is punished, while aggressive and insulting pro-government rhetoric is ignored. 

This double-standard approach has brought the impartiality of law and justice in Turkey to a point of questioning. In particular, the fact that media outlets and figures close to the government do not face any criminal sanctions for their insults and accusations against dissidents shows that freedom of expression is applied arbitrarily. While criticisms directed at the government are immediately evaluated within the scope of the crime of "insulting the government" and have become a tool for silencing dissenting voices, no investigation is even opened when pro-government individuals commit this crime.

It also reveals the government's influence and pressure on the judiciary in Turkey. The impartiality and independence of the judiciary are cornerstones of democracies. However, serious criticisms regarding the independence of the judiciary in Turkey have come to the fore in recent years. Suppressing government criticism through the judiciary damages trust in the impartiality of the legal system.

It is a fact how much freedom of expression has narrowed in Turkey and how double standards prevail in the implementation of this freedom. When the government's intolerance for criticism is combined with policies that restrict freedom of expression, social peace and democratic values are endangered. Criticism is an indispensable element for the healthy functioning of a democracy, and limiting this freedom will lead to further polarization of society and an increase in social tensions. For Turkey to build a democratic future, the protection of freedom of expression and the establishment of a legal system free from double standards are essential.
