It has been in the news for a week.
They say buildings are collapsing in Gebze.
Children have died again.
It started with one building.
They blamed the contractor.
However, looking at the pictures of the collapsed building, it turned out that the incident had a different cause.
In fact, the building did not collapse; it tilted to the side.
This means there was no issue with the strength of the reinforced concrete frame.
Then, when other buildings on the same line also tilted, the cause of the incident became clear.
The ground, weakened by the metro construction, caused the buildings lined up along the route to tilt.
Differential settlement occurred in the ground.
The bearing capacity of the soil was reduced to zero.
With today's engineering techniques, one would have to be a fool, an imbecile, or a simpleton to let this happen.
All kinds of tools and equipment are available.
Technical hardware and engineering knowledge are also available.
So how is it that buildings collapse and people die because of metro construction excavation?
The answer is simple.
As long as we do not remove from the system those so-called contractor wannabes—the riffraff with devilish faces and scruffy beards who sold their cattle to migrate to the city, are illiterate, wear cheap underwear bought from the market under shiny suits bought from Gucci, and show off with heavily damaged Mercedes cars bought on the cheap—children will continue to die.
As long as we do not remove from the system those so-called bigoted builders who have never solved a strength of materials problem in their lives, who stare blankly when you say "stress equals load divided by area," who think a pendulum support is a mule's foot, and who look for a hole to hide in when you mention soil bearing capacity or dry unit weight, children will continue to die.
In fact, we have absolutely no need for these prison-escapee builder bigots.
There are many firms in Turkey owned by engineer-contractors that can carry out projects requiring high technology and engineering knowledge, such as metro construction.
In fact, these firms are currently building metros abroad, even in the heart of Europe.
These engineer-contractor firms, whose founding dates go back quite a long way, have a very high level of engineering knowledge and depth.
Very capable engineers with master's and even doctoral degrees work at these firms of ours.
I know those who teach at universities.
These engineer-contractors have reached a level that meets the conditions and qualifications of the high-standard construction project specifications of G8 member countries.
However, if these engineer-contractor firms are excluded and replaced by fake builders who were founded just yesterday, do not know how to plan, cannot read projects, do not have sufficiently experienced and qualified engineers, and employ engineers at minimum wage, we will continue to see children die inside tilting buildings.
In short, as long as we do not abolish the grotesque tender condition that preferentially awards contracts to firms that lack qualifications and competence, known as 21b, we are not destined to live.
