It is one of the most famous slogans we have heard since the 80s.
“Turkey will not become Iran”
Almost half of Iran's population is Turkic.
Of course, sectarianism has taken precedence over Turkic identity, but since the Cold War, Turkic consciousness has been visibly coming to the fore.
I can no longer tell if it is taqiyya or not.
Then, Khatami, one of Iran's reformist presidents, let the cat out of the bag.
Mohammad Khatami stated that although Turkey does not have oil, it has reached more advanced levels than his own country through tourism and industry.
Khatami said, "I do not mean to say that Turkey is a model for us, but Turkey does not have a single drop of oil. Yet today, it has gone much further than us with tourism and industry. We had oil, they did not, but their tourism revenues are higher than our total oil revenues."
Turkey did not become Iran, but let us not underestimate Iran's efforts to become like Turkey.
The Iranian President Pezeshkian could also accelerate this momentum.
