I recently ran into my nephew.

He had achieved a very high ranking in the university entrance exam and had entered a prestigious-sounding but hollow university on a scholarship.

He had even received a bit of a preference bonus on top of that.

He is in his third year.

I asked him how school was going.

He said he doesn't really go to classes.

He mostly hangs out in Ortaköy.

When I asked why, his answer did not surprise me at all.

The professors mostly teach their classes from slides.

Because their English is insufficient, they cannot speak extemporaneously.

They read the slides they prepared via copy-paste from the screen for hours.

Their faces are turned toward the slide, and their backs are constantly turned toward the students.

The students are either browsing social media or falling asleep.

They pretend to conduct assessment and evaluation with made-up exams, and they hand out grades generously.

Since it is not a public university, they coddle the students.

There is no one among you who has not heard a story similar to this.

If institutions do not pull themselves together immediately, a tragic end will yield frightening consequences for us all.

In fact, it is impossible to encounter such apathy in either America or continental Europe.
