Soylu Law Firm: I was almost scammed too

They called me first thing in the morning.

An unregistered number I didn't recognize.

I didn't answer.

Then, two messages.

“Mr. GÖKHAN ARSLAN, today is the final processing day for your criminal file that has been moved to the settlement scope. Please call to avoid being a victim. SOYLU LAW FIRM: 02129081003”

I was curious.

I wondered if I had a lien against me due to an unpaid property tax or a toll road fee.

I called.

A highly professional automated phone response system greeted me.

Press one, press three, wait for the settlement unit.

An algorithm that leaves no room for doubt, like 'you are currently sixth in line'.

Anyway, someone finally connected.

Before I even said anything, they stated both my name and the first and last two digits of my Turkish ID number.

Their tone of voice wasn't bad either.

Since I have heard a lot about scams like this, I was cautious.

I asked about the issue.

They claimed I had been fined for accessing gambling and betting sites from my phone—which I have never done in my life, I prefer the live version—and that I had been penalized.

My fine of 103,265 liras would be reduced to 33,150 liras through a settlement, provided I paid it today.

I realized it was a scam.

At that moment, I started cycling through the pithy sayings of Turkish literature in my mind and went on the offensive, but the phone clicked shut.

Still, the lawyer-impersonating scammer heard a few verses. 

Keep your antennas up so your bank accounts aren't drained.

Though, since even the overdraft accounts at the bank are now used to the limit, there isn't any money left anyway, but they still have their eyes on those few gold coins you might have tucked away.
