I have spent years traveling between Eskişehir and Istanbul.
I still do.
The journeys that began in 1998 with the Fatih and Cumhuriyet Express trains continue today with the high-speed train.
I also travel by car from time to time.
Every time I pass through Gebze Dilovası, my intuition that a Crime Against Humanity is being committed has never failed me.
After passing through the beautiful Pamukova, once you reach the point where the Sakarya valley we enter meets the Black Sea, you immediately feel the weight of mercury in the air.
The deep blue sky suddenly seems to knit its brows, trying to tell you it has a complaint.
If you can understand it, of course.
Because I realized even back then that the poor people in the region were suffering, I wrote projects for European Union funds regarding Occupational Safety.
I utilized millions of euros in resources for my approved projects.
However, we could never manage to present these studies to the Ministry of Labor.
We pleaded to give these years of accumulated projects to the ministry for free.
It didn't happen.
If we had presented them, would these accidents not have happened?
They certainly would not have.
Neither 300 people in a mine nor 30 people in the middle of Beşiktaş would have died.
And little girls would not have been torn to pieces in the illegal perfume hell in Dilovası, right next to the İşkur building in the heart of Turkey.
What was the sin of these little girls that they went to heaven before they could even get enough of this world?
Of course, it is that they were left unprotected.
Our ministry, which should have taken these poor families under its wing, has slept again.
It has neglected its duties.
It did not open a lane for us or take a look at the work we did regarding occupational safety.
Because the ministry prioritized political views, it kept its doors tightly shut to us.
It performed inspections and training as if they were mere formalities rather than substantive actions.
It turned a blind eye.
The result: our young, angel-faced, diamond-like little ones melted away, piece by piece, in 1000-degree ammonium acid vapor.
Even the film "Blood Diamond" does not contain this much cruelty.
