There is a very famous film.
“Braveheart”, starring Mel Gibson.
Recently, while teaching in the architecture department, I asked the students about the relationship between design and freedom, while explaining that only free minds can design.
None of them had watched it.
I looked it up and saw it was released in 1995.
The students, however, were born in 2002-2003.
I must admit, it dampened my spirits a bit.
Even though I still feel like I am in my late 20s, I am teaching students who are in their early 20s.
In the end, I showed them the scene where Mel Gibson risks his head for freedom.
It is a legendary scene.
It explains that life has no meaning without freedom.
Both living abroad for a long time and the recent student mobility have given me the opportunity to compare students from free societies with others.
While children from free countries move toward the modern world, others are rapidly heading toward the Neolithic era.
The difference is visible to the naked eye, and worse, it is widening logarithmically.
I do not know how this problem can be solved in favor of children from unfree societies, but TURKISH AIRLINES could make a small contribution for Turkish youth.
It could develop a program, especially for university students who have a green passport but do not grasp the privileges and power of this passport—and I have yet to see one who does.
For those who do not have a green passport, it could implement a program targeting countries that do not require visas.
In Europe, very cheap flight ticket and accommodation practices, especially for students, allow young people to travel the world and get to know other cultures, broadening their horizons.
It contributes to them thinking more freely.
It helps them clarify and define their positions in the world.
It paves the way for them to integrate more easily into the modern world.
I doubt it, but perhaps someone will hear our voice.
