The Turkish economy has created a brand-new reality for companies with the transformation it has undergone in recent years. At the center of this reality lies a concept that most businesses still do not fully grasp: inflation accounting. It is the year 2026, a period where the disinflation process is underway following high inflation, but the mark left on balance sheets by cumulative price increases has not been erased. The critical question now is: Is your company growing on paper, or is it actually shrinking? The answer to this question is hidden in how you handle inflation accounting.
For many years, we viewed inflation accounting as a technical adjustment made at the end of the period to manage tax effects. However, in 2026, this perspective is an invitation to bankruptcy. Think about it: If you are valuing your inventory at the cost from three years ago and not calculating the actual amount required to replace the product you sold, you are effectively eroding your capital. A company that appears to be profitable but is seeing its equity melt away is like a ship taking on water; it sinks before the crew even realizes it. The interesting part is that you also pay taxes during this sinking process. In other words, you transfer the tax on your eroding capital to the state. This is called "silent liquidation."
INFLATION ACCOUNTING IS ESSENTIAL
Financial institutions now look beyond collateral when allocating credit. Adjusted financial statements have become the sole document that shows a company's true debt-repayment capacity. For banks, a balance sheet that applies inflation accounting is a message that "this company is looking at itself in the mirror." Those that do not are risky clients. A simple example: A company that shows real estate purchased in 2023 at its cost value is actually reporting its equity as lower than it is. The bank, in turn, sets a credit limit based on this figure. The opportunity is missed.
CASH FLOW IS LIFE
Profitability is important, but the most ruthless trap of 2026 lies elsewhere: Being profitable but unable to generate cash. When the gap between the collection period of trade receivables and the maturity of debts widens, the company remains operationally breathless while growing on paper. Inflation accounting comes into play here as well; because unadjusted figures mask your actual cash needs. If you have bright figures on your income statement but no money in the till, the problem is not in your accounting records, but in the way you interpret those records.
THE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION OF AUDIT
The future of tax auditing lies in data matching. The e-invoice, e-waybill, and e-archive infrastructure implemented by the Revenue Administration in recent years has reached a maturity level capable of making sense of millions of data points today. While it is too early to say that AI-supported real-time cross-checks are fully operational, the direction is clear: inconsistencies between VAT declarations, bank movements, and notifications are being detected increasingly faster. This is positive for corporate companies competing with the informal economy; for those who take risks thinking "I won't get caught anyway," the end of the road is in sight. Compliance is no longer a choice, but a survival strategy itself.
COMPASS
In the middle of 2026, the biggest risk for companies is not ignorance, but illusion. In a period where what is thought to be profit is actually capital, and what is thought to be growth is actually the effect of inflation, there is only one way to see the truth: adjusted, transparent, and comparable financial statements. Understanding these statements is more important than having them prepared. Because companies do not go bankrupt; companies are driven to bankruptcy by managers who cannot realize their true situation in time. Inflation accounting is not just a standard; it is your compass. Any ship that sets sail without a compass cannot find its route, no matter which way the wind blows.
