From perfect to 'good enough'

In the automotive sector, quality was defined for many years around almost a single principle: making no mistakes. For brands like Toyota in particular, quality meant strict standards, low tolerance, and a very low error rate per million. Lean manufacturing, Kaizen, and a culture of continuous improvement turned this understanding not just into a production model, but also into a brand identity. This capital of trust is the reason why, despite recalling more than twenty million vehicles over the last fifteen years, Toyota is still associated with the perception of being the 'most robust automobile'.

The third structure that completed this framework was Six Sigma. This approach, which statistically minimizes errors in processes, transformed quality into a measurable and controllable performance criterion. Lean manufacturing, Kaizen, and Six Sigma together established the 'standard of perfection' in automotive. An error was not a situation to be tolerated; it was seen as a deviation that needed to be eliminated. It was assumed that the better the production process was controlled, the more error-free the product would be.

However, today we are entering a period where this quality approach is being questioned. The 'Smart Standard Activity' concept, which Toyota has highlighted in recent years, defines quality from a different perspective: The issue is no longer perfection, but the extent to which the product meets its intended use. The system, which once aimed to eliminate errors on the production line, today turns errors into a variable managed in the field. In other words, the goal is no longer the 'perfect product'; it is a product that is good enough within technical, economic, and temporal limits.

There are strong reasons behind this change. The automobile is no longer a mechanical product; it is a software-heavy, connected, and constantly updated platform. The electric transformation, cost pressure, shortening development times, and especially the speed advantage of Chinese manufacturers are forcing brands to rethink their old understanding of quality.

This is precisely why the relaxed quality approach defined as 'Smart Standard Activity' is gaining importance. Here, minor flaws that do not affect functionality are no longer considered 'errors'. In this approach, quality is associated not with what is theoretically perfect, but with a product that reaches the market on time, fulfills basic functions for the user, and can be improved later if necessary. At this point, the critical question is: Is this really a decline in quality, or is it a redefinition of quality according to new conditions?

Quality in the automotive industry is expressed through standards and aims to reduce production errors to zero, increase traceability, and prevent costly product recalls. When quality is relaxed in this way, will these standards also be relaxed? Moreover, quality does not remain with the main manufacturer. We are talking about a standard that spreads throughout the supply chain. When the main firm (OEM) relaxes quality, what dimensions will this flexibility evolve into by the time it reaches the last link of the supply chain? How will quality standards be defined at this point? 

Therefore, it is difficult to explain the new era with a single understanding of quality. What is more realistic is to speak of a two-layered structure: On one side, the continuation of a near-zero-error approach in safety, mechanical durability, and basic driving systems. On the other side, a more flexible, updatable, and 'fitness-for-purpose' oriented understanding of quality in software, user experience, and digital features. This distinction is important. Because quality is no longer a one-dimensional concept.

Ultimately, the paradigm in automotive is shifting. Yesterday, quality was getting as close to perfection as possible. Today, quality is turning into a balance established between speed, cost, intended use, and user expectations. But there is one criterion that does not change, and that is trust. No matter how quality is defined, the moment it erodes user trust, that definition loses its sustainability.

The real question is: Is the relaxation of quality standards a necessity, or an invisible risk? Everything accepted as 'good enough' today could turn into tomorrow's recall crisis. And in automotive, the cost of an error is always heavy.
