The 100th Anniversary of Our Republic: Walking into the Future in Atatürk's Footsteps

Whether or not the centennial celebrations of our Republic were celebrated with enough enthusiasm has become one of our popular topics of discussion in recent days.

Of course, the enthusiasm and content of the celebrations are important. This is one of the ways to show our love and commitment to something.

But should we have just gotten stuck on this during the centennial of our Republic? Should the debate really have been limited to 'how large a flag we hung, how many people took to the streets, or which municipality brought which artist?'

In my opinion, the 100th anniversary of our Republic should have been a time for deep reflection, evaluation, and commitment to a nation's identity and future, beyond just being a historical celebration. Yet, as always, we chose the easy way out and got stuck on 'form'.

However, the Republic of Turkey was the beginning of a great transformation 100 years ago. A brave nation, led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, built a modern republic after winning its national independence following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

So, in the years following this great achievement, have we been able to sufficiently uphold Atatürk's legacy?

How much did we take responsibility when our Republic, built on the foundations of secularism, science, reason, art, and culture, faced difficult tests from time to time?

What did we do to cope with a dynamic world, face global challenges, and guide social changes?

What work did we do, or support, that encourages social integration and increases respect for human rights?

Instead of calculating 'how many balloons we released and how many fireworks we set off' as a centennial celebration project, couldn't we have encouraged younger generations to feel committed to these values by investing more in education and scientific research?

For those who understand the Republic of Turkey that Atatürk dreamed of, it is possible to multiply these questions.

The 100th anniversary of our Republic should have represented a moment where our commitment to these values was strengthened. We should have worked by accepting these values not just as a memory of the past, but also as a guarantee of the future.

Again, we took the easy way out, falling into the shallow and formalistic debates we were drawn into, without asking, 'What have I done and what will I do for our Republic, for my country?'

The day we move beyond the level of social media keyboard warriors and actually lend a hand to the exaltation of our Republic, we will have truly honored the flag we hung and been able to look into the eyes of the Atatürk portrait we displayed without shame.

This is a great responsibility toward the founding will of this Republic.

The 100th anniversary of our Republic should represent a new beginning. This beginning is an opportunity to further elevate the values of our Republic, to represent Turkey more effectively in the international arena, and to offer a brighter outlook for the future.

By uniting our commitment to Atatürk's legacy, we must realize the vision of carrying the Republic of Turkey to a brighter tomorrow.

Carrying the Republic of Turkey to a brighter future is the greatest duty entrusted to us by Atatürk. This duty encompasses every segment of society. By working together, protecting democratic values, showing respect for human rights, and prioritizing justice, we must carry our Republic even further.
