Rent hikes over the past year have begun to pit landlords and tenants against each other. The government even capped rent increases at 25 percent. Especially in major cities, police personnel want to move into housing units with lower rents due to rising costs, but even when their turn comes, they cannot move in.

This is because officers who are already living in the housing units and whose 5-year term has expired are not moving out. In fact, the common denominator for both those who want to move in and those who refuse to leave is the rising cost of rent.

For this reason, police officers who have applied for housing and are waiting for their turn, or who cannot move in despite their turn having come, describe the problem they are complaining about in an email they sent as follows:

The officer who gets a spot considers themselves 'lucky'. But as it turns out, this luck only goes as far as winning the lottery. Because their turn never really comes, and they can never move into the housing they dream of. Moving into police housing has become everyone's dream, especially in the last year. Because housing means low rent.

THOSE WHOSE 5-YEAR TERM HAS EXPIRED ARE NOT LEAVING

But officers whose 5-year residency period has expired are not moving out of the housing. In fact, just as we want to move into housing because of high rents, those living in the housing units are not leaving because they would have to pay high rents elsewhere. From time to time, we even witness police officers and their families who do not leave the housing being evicted by riot police. This is such a difficult thing. Both for those living there and for the officers carrying out the eviction. According to statistics published by the General Directorate of Security in January, there are 319 thousand 600 police personnel across Turkey, while there are 39 thousand 318 housing units. According to the same statistics, the occupancy rate for housing is stated as 12 percent. As these statistics show, the number of housing units is very insufficient. For this reason, married officers assigned to major cities do not want to bring their families. They come alone, and 3 or 4 officers get together to move into a rented house. During the assignment period, major cities are no longer preferred."
