The killer of 20-year-old Ata Emre Akman is those who cannot stop the killers

Turkey's agenda was once again very active last week.

Our public was mostly unaware of events that, under normal circumstances, would absolutely require the resignation of those in the highest levels of government. Perhaps they were indifferent to what was happening.

From the footage of the moment Sinan Ateş was murdered to the statement his wife Ayşe Ateş made on screen, many issues have once again shown that Turkey is falling apart.

UNSPEAKABLE HORROR, UNSPEAKABLE PAIN

But... In recent years, no footage, no moment, no event has horrified me—someone who has witnessed many terrible experiences—as much as the brutal murder of 20-year-old motorcycle courier Ata Emre Akman.

The moment I watched the footage, I thought I would have a brain hemorrhage; my vision went dark, my ears rang. My heart raced as if it were going to jump out of my chest. I felt an unspeakable pain mixed with anger. His mother and father came to my mind, and I felt like I was losing my mind.

My hand reached for the phone repeatedly. I made various calls, from the Ministry of Interior to the Balıkesir Provincial Police Department. I tried to reach the identity, age, and name of that terrible killer. I rebelled with pain and anger.

THE QUESTION IN OUR MINDS: "WHY THIS IMPUNITY?"

The question I asked Istanbul Bar Association President Filiz Saraç, who was a guest at the 12punto studio recently, came to my mind: "Where is justice? Why are criminals free, why are killers walking around freely?"

This question had appeared in my mind perhaps thousands of times at various moments...

There are countless reasons for the increasing culture of violence in our country... However, the government, in the Turkey it has ruled for nearly a quarter of a century, has not been able to stop crime, criminals, psychopathic killers, thieves, and the corrupt. It has always chosen to bicker with the ordinary citizen and hold them accountable.

It pardoned tax evaders, it pardoned killers, it pardoned thieves... Criminal gangs, who now see impunity as a certainty, and criminals who aim to earn their living by seizing people's property and bodies, have reached the point of saying, "We'll just serve a few days and get out, our reputation will grow."

The sole culprit for the increasing corruption, crime rates, impunity, and injustice as a whole in Turkey is the AKP government, which has been ruling the country for nearly a quarter of a century.

That government, despite having all the power in its hands, cannot prevent individual armament, nor can it stop female killers, nor the sick souls who try to brutally kill people on the street....

Police officers who should be loyal to the state can be involved in a murder behind their ideological identities. They prioritize the interests of the community or sect they are affiliated with. Judges and prosecutors cannot ensure justice.

It is the innocent 20-year-old Ata Emre Akmans who suffer.

I am sure everyone has the same question in their mind: Will the killer E.Ö., who is alleged to be 17 years old and has at least 6 criminal records, return to our midst?

Will individual armament and the culture of violence be prevented?

Mafia series that poison the masses and generations will continue to be filmed, we have no doubt about that. But will media bosses, who focus on money by broadcasting those series, put their hands on their conscience? Will they say, "It's not worth it, let's not poison society"?

When we do a quick internet search, according to the General Directorate of Security's 2022 data, the number of licensed weapons in our country is 998 thousand 237 (June 2022).

According to the research of the Umut Foundation, the real problem is the number of unlicensed weapons. According to the data provided by the foundation, there are approximately 36 million unlicensed weapons in Turkey.

In 2023, at least 2 thousand 500 people were taken from life as a result of armed attacks.

I am not addressing the government; I am shouting. May women, men, children, and animals no longer live in fear of being killed in this country.

May they not live in fear of being shot, murdered, stabbed, robbed, or sexually assaulted on the streets. Let justice be served. Fight against crime and criminals.
