In all my years in this profession, I have seen many turncoats…
I have seen many flip-floppers.
I have seen many traitors.
I have seen many shameless people.
I have seen many sellouts.
I have seen many brazen people.
I have seen many lowlifes.
I have seen many frauds.
I have seen many freaks.
I have seen many spineless people…
But the other day, I saw something so shocking that even I didn't know what to say!
*
For example, I saw someone who was once so staunchly Kemalist that he had his eyes set on the leadership of an opposition party suddenly become a puppet of the ruling power… He accepted being a puppet; he snatched an ambassadorship seat… He wasn't even ashamed of his own surname.
But what I saw the other day overshadowed even that.
*
Then I saw a lieutenant… He was a lieutenant, but he put generals to shame when it came to being a soldier of Atatürk… It turned out it was all an act! We all admired this young man. In the courtrooms, he did what the former Chief of General Staff couldn't do and challenged all the members of the ruling power. Then he was acquitted; after he was released, even the leader of the main opposition party attended his wedding and served as a witness… Later, he was elected as a deputy from that party, then moved to another party. Today, he worships his torturer! Because he joined the side of those who had him thrown into prison. Now he is a member of the ruling party and cannot praise his new leader enough… Most recently, he was caught red-handed trying to pull strings at the Ministry of Justice, but he still came out on top, claiming, “I was trying to help a martyr's relative!” He too joined the caravan of traitors; he snatched a parliamentary seat… He wasn't even ashamed of the tens of thousands who once suffered tear gas for him in Silivri…
But what I saw the other day surpassed even him!
*
You might have forgotten; the “master” of these people was a “brave” friend. No one could hold a candle to him when it came to Kemalism. He wouldn't leave a single insult unsaid against the current rulers. Then, in an instant, he twisted his stance and landed a spot at the Palace. He accepted being a puppet; he snatched a chief advisor seat… He wasn't even ashamed of his old writings.
But what I saw the other day was even more shameless than him…
*
Another one had risen to the top management of the main opposition party. He was making the harshest attacks against the ruling party. Suddenly, he changed in a few months. He became the staunchest supporter of the ruling power. He accepted being a puppet; he snatched a mayoral seat… He wasn't even ashamed of the people he once gave speeches to in the squares.
But what I saw the other day turned out to be even more of a sycophant than him.
*
You have probably figured out who I am talking about above…
There are so many of them that I don't know which one to write about?
You remember how they were leftists, how they were Kemalists, how they were fearless…
And how angry they all were at the power they are now slaves to…
Today, they have become “trash”…
Neither the millions they betrayed care about them, nor do those sitting at the gate they have newly approached…
*
Still, none of them can hold a candle to what I saw the other day!
Let me give you his name:
This friend's name is Hulki Cevizoğlu!
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the ceremony for the start of duty of 6,992 police officers held at Atatürk Airport. This friend, who was once a fast-talking Kemalist and leftist and is now an AKP Istanbul Deputy, also attended the photo shoot that took place after the ceremony. The effort he made to be in the same frame as President Erdoğan makes one ashamed of humanity!
He moved to the President's side, he was pushed away.
He crouched down in front like a football player, he was told to stand up.
Then he was thrown to the very end of the protocol.
Yet he didn't mind any of it.
*
As I said…
I have seen many flip-floppers.
I have seen many traitors.
I have seen many shameless people.
I have seen many sellouts.
I have seen many brazen people.
I have seen many lowlifes.
I have seen many frauds.
I have seen many freaks.
Let's wait and see what else life will show from now on…
I have only one expectation…
May it not make me like these friends; that is enough!
