Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler, during the budget negotiations for his Ministry, announced that they plan to purchase 40 Eurofighter jets and stated the following:
“Both England and Spain are saying 'yes', and now they are working to convince Germany. England and Spain are saying, 'We will solve that problem.'”
Before the ink on this statement had even dried, UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps arrived in Ankara. A “Statement of Intent on Defense Cooperation” was signed between the two countries. After the meeting, Minister Yaşar Güler stated that “the UK is an important ally and strategic partner of Turkey” and once again said that “they want to develop cooperation in new areas such as Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets” and that “[with the statement of intent] they have confirmed our determination on this matter.”
The British Secretary, without entering into the Eurofighter issue, used general expressions, saying, “Our relations are very important for the United Kingdom.” and “Our cooperation is very deep,” while emphasizing the importance of Sweden's NATO membership.
HOPEFULLY THEY DON'T FOIST THE FRIGATES ON US
Following the visit, it was claimed that an agreement was signed for Turkey to purchase Type-23 frigates from the UK. Experts warned that the model in question causes many problems and that this purchase would not align with the domestic and national defense industry strategy. CHP Deputy Chairman responsible for the Ministry of National Defense, retired Rear Admiral Yankı Bağcıoğlu, also commented, “If true, it is an insult at the very least, and a waste of resources for the Turkish Naval Forces.”
Let us suffice by saying, “I hope we do not squander money on the UK for frigates, just as we did with the S-400s that we do not/cannot use,” and continue.
In the following days, a statement also came from Ministry of National Defense sources; it turns out that England would help convince Germany regarding the Eurofighter sale!..
Hear it and don't believe it!..
WHY ARE THEY NOT GIVING THEM?
So, what is the reason for Germany implementing this blockade? Primarily, it is to hinder Turkey's activities in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean due to its patronage of Greece. In other words, it is the same justification as the US not providing F-35s and F-16s.
Recall the incident that led to Erdoğan's reaction, “There is no one named Mitsotakis for me anymore.” When it was announced before his Washington visit in May 2022 that Mitsotakis would try to prevent the sale of F-16s to Turkey, Erdoğan had said:
“There is no point in rolling up your sleeves before seeing the stream. I mean, I don't know what kind of statements Biden makes or will make. Of course, Mitsotakis' messages there are a separate issue. Therefore, we will reveal our stance after seeing everything, especially after seeing Biden's statements.”
The result?
Mitsotakis went; he showed Biden the “Blue Homeland” map and complained about Turkey. He repeated his known theses on Cyprus. He explained that they would not tolerate flights in the Aegean and even said they wanted to buy 20-25 F-35 type fighter jets from the US.
What was Biden's attitude? He welcomed Mitsotakis to the White House wearing a tie with the Greek flag and introduced him with the joke “Joe Bidenopoulos.”
It was after this incident that Erdoğan crossed out Mitsotakis; yet, even though nothing changed on the Greek front, he opened a “new page” with them. In this context, he will be in Athens tomorrow. I wonder if he will ask Mitsotakis, “Why are you making us get blocked from F-35, F-16, and Eurofighter sales?”
Speaking of Biden's tie; recently at the World Climate Action Summit in Dubai, which Erdoğan also attended, King Charles of England, who was stated to help us with the Eurofighter sale, also wore a tie with the Greek flag!..
Returning to the Eurofighter business; it is understood from the statements of our officials that England, Italy, and Spain, which are in the consortium that produces this aircraft, support the sale, and only Germany is creating obstacles.
We stated the reason for the German obstacle; Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. Well, aren't the EU member countries Italy, Spain, and even England all on Greece's side on these issues? They are clearly playing good cop-bad cop, that's all!..
IF PALESTINE IS OUR “RED LINE,” WHAT ARE THESE?
Let's open a separate heading for England in Cyprus and Eastern Mediterranean policy.
Since the war began, both the government and its media have remembered Israel's “Promised Land/Greater Israel” project. Just two days ago, Erdoğan, and today his partner Devlet Bahçeli, made assessments regarding this. The media also emphasized that 22 provinces of Turkey and Cyprus are within the scope of this project. Likewise, dozens of articles were written about Jews occupying the TRNC through property acquisition.
As is known; England is a guarantor in Cyprus, just like Turkey and Greece. However, it looks favorably on Greece's desire to abolish this system by describing it as “outdated.”
England also has two bases in the Greek Cypriot administration. When the Palestine-Israel war started, it was claimed that German Special Forces were deployed to the Greek Cypriot side. While TRNC President Ersin Tatar reacted, there was no sound from guarantor Turkey. Subsequently, it was alleged that the US transported weapons from Incirlik to the British base in the Greek Cypriot side and from there to Israel, and that England also transported weapons to Israel from its bases there.
The Ministry of National Defense, however, denied only the Incirlik part of these allegations while remaining silent on other issues.
Ultimately, a few days ago, the UK Ministry of Defense announced that British aircraft would fly in Gaza airspace to provide intelligence to Israel. Hamas, which Ankara supports unconditionally, also condemned England, warning that if it did so, it would be “a partner in the crimes and massacres committed by the Zionist occupiers against the Palestinian people.”
IF VAHDETTIN IS NOT A “TRAITOR,” THEN LORD CURZON IS ALSO OUR “FRIEND”
First; if Cyprus is our “national cause,” shouldn't England, as a guarantor, be asked, “What kind of business are you conducting there?”
Second; if Palestine is our “red line” - like the saying 'I cry and I shop' - what is the meaning of expecting help for Eurofighters from England, which founded Israel and brought the region to this state, and planning to buy frigates from them on top of that?
Clearly, it has long been forgotten that England unleashed the Greeks upon us for the occupation of Turkey and prepared the Treaty of Sèvres projects.
Our new “friend” and “hope” be auspicious;
Since those who call Vahdettin a “traitor” are questioned and accused, will Lord Curzon also be declared the “architect of this friendship” at this rate?!
