A New Beginning: September and Childhood

September is a somewhat romantic and melancholic month, one for which poems are written and films are made, and to which everyone assigns their own meaning. Perhaps due to the influence of social media, it has become one of the most popular months on the calendar. For our beautiful country, Turkey, located in the Northern Hemisphere, it signifies harvest time, the end of summer vacation, the opening of schools, and children taking a step into a new term.

While I do not know if it holds a special meaning for you, I would like to emphasize that September is a transitional period where nature gradually takes on the colors of autumn and the energy of summer is replaced by a sweet coolness. This transition represents not only a seasonal shift but also an emotional and mental transformation for both children and adults. As the freedom and comfort of summer vacation give way to the school routine, children also strive to adapt to this change and transformation.

The opening of schools marks significant developmental milestones in the life journey of children. During these important developmental stages, parents need to be by their children's side at all times and support them. Facilitating children's adaptation to school, giving them confidence, and supporting them against the challenges they may face are among the most important duties of parents. Speaking patiently with a child who does not want to go to school in the mornings and helping them acquire the habit of waking up early; encouraging a child who is anxious about a new subject; and seeking professional support for children who cannot adapt to their peers or make friends are primary responsibilities that parents must fulfill during this process.

September is also a turning point for educators. Teachers feel a sweet excitement in their hearts as they open the door to each new classroom, thinking about the students they will meet for the first time. This sweet excitement also means new responsibilities. With the awareness of these responsibilities, our teachers work with a thousand and one sacrifices; despite the violence directed at teachers, their professional dignity being trampled upon, and their financial and spiritual hardships, they do not give up on their students!

September also means making new friends, being introduced to different subjects, and meeting new teachers for children. These new beginnings are very important for children's social and academic development. A new classroom, new lessons, and new knowledge expand children's imagination and trigger their sense of curiosity. These innovations brought by school open new doors in children's lives. At this point, September is not just a beginning, but also a month of discovery.

Childhood is full of pure and fresh curiosity. Each new day offers children an undiscovered game, unlearned knowledge, and an unlived adventure. With the opening of schools, this adventure becomes even more vivid for children. Children can overcome this process in the best way possible with the support and love of parents and educators and make a strong start to the new term.

In a way, September and childhood are also harbingers of hope, freshness, and innovation. With the new adventures that begin this month, each child takes one step closer to becoming the bright stars of the future. Let us all welcome this new beginning with enthusiasm and hope, and stand by our children. Despite the damn agenda where we receive bad news about our children and feel helpless, let us make a new beginning in September 2024 for our children, who are the guarantee of our future, and treat this fresh start brought by September as a period full of curiosity and discovery!
