Throughout human history, sports have served as a unifying force. The Olympics, the most significant and comprehensive sporting event worldwide, bring together different cultures, languages, and beliefs. In this respect, the Olympics transcend ordinary physical competition, carrying a universal mission that aims to pass on certain values and principles to future generations.
This spirit, which we can call the Olympic spirit, is shaped by the meanings carried by the words Citius (faster), Altius (higher), Fortius (stronger), and [the newly added] Communiter (together). Instilling this spirit in today's youth is critical not only for raising athletes but also for creating leaders who carry social responsibility.
Sports professionals and various non-governmental organizations, aware of the importance and value of the Olympic spirit in social life, are developing various projects to ensure that the building blocks of this spirit are constructed at an early age.
One of these projects is the "Olympic Values Education Project," carried out by the Habitat Association in collaboration with Visa and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The "Olympic Values Education" project teaches children and youth aged 11-18 the values that form the foundation of the Olympics, such as friendship, respect, equality, and responsibility, and shows how these values foster social peace and solidarity. The project encourages young people to develop not only physically but also mentally, emotionally, and socially. Olympic values contribute to participants developing team spirit, learning to take responsibility, and growing into individuals sensitive to social issues. Young people discover how to apply these values not just in sports halls, but in every area of life.
The Olympic Values Education Project, built by the Habitat Association on Olympic values, has a structure enriched with interactive methods. Trainings provided by volunteer ambassadors and workshops held enable young people to meet sports and participate in social life. These trainings are implemented in different provinces such as Istanbul, Izmir, Aydin, Adana, Antalya, Mersin, Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Ordu, Ankara, Gaziantep, and Van.
With this training program, young people are not limited to theoretical knowledge but find the opportunity to experience Olympic values through various activities such as group games, workshops, and social responsibility projects. In this process, all participants gain a deep awareness of empathy, cooperation, and making a social contribution.
The Olympic Values Education Project is an important opportunity that provides children and youth aged 11-18 with not only the spirit of sports but also the fundamental human values that are valid in every area of life. Within the scope of the project, hundreds of young people and children have been reached so far in twelve pilot provinces through volunteer trainers, and the trainings are continuing at full speed. However, awareness and social support are very important for the expansion of this training, which continues to be implemented in educational institutions, sports clubs, and various public organizations for children and youth aged 11-18.
At this point, we too can support this project, get information from Habitat Association officials and the coordinators of the Olympic Values Education Project about what we can do, and cooperate with them.
Let us not forget that the Olympics are a symbol not only of sports but also of humanity's common values, and we all need a healthy and joyful world built on these values!
