Instilling a reading habit in our children

“Children who read books and make reading a part of their lives” is, I believe, the dream of every parent. But what percentage of parents who have this dream have made reading a part of their own lives?

Today, technology and social media occupy an increasingly large space in children's lives. Smartphones, tablets, and television can make it difficult for children to develop a reading habit. However, considering the role that reading plays in children's cognitive, linguistic, and social development, instilling this habit becomes even more important for parents and educators.

Books improve children's vocabulary, enabling them to express themselves in a healthy and proper way. They offer children a rich linguistic structure that they might not encounter at school or in daily life. This richness strengthens children's expressive abilities and improves their thinking skills. Children who acquire a reading habit also develop skills such as comprehension, analysis, and critical thinking, and these skills are necessary not only for academic success but for success in all areas of life.

Another important effect of reading on children is that books support their social and emotional development. While reading, children meet different characters and begin to understand their feelings, thoughts, and experiences. The role of parents is quite critical in instilling a reading habit in children. Children take their parents' behaviors as an example. Parents reading regularly fosters a positive attitude toward reading in children. Furthermore, parents reading aloud to their children is a very important step in laying the foundations of a reading habit. While this activity helps build a strong bond between the child and the parent, it also instills a love of reading.

Educational institutions have as much responsibility as parents in instilling a reading habit in children. Educators talking about books contributes greatly to children acquiring a reading habit. Reading hours, book clubs, and reading events organized in schools reinforce children's love of reading, and providing opportunities for children to read books they have chosen themselves in these events boosts their self-confidence and increases their motivation to read.

Rewarding and appreciating achievements are important sources of motivation for children. Rewarding a child who reads encourages them to read more. However, what is important here is that the rewards should be moral, not material; for example, instead of buying the child a high-value gift for reading a book, it is more beneficial to plan a special activity where you can spend quality time with the child. Thus, the child begins to perform the act of reading not for a reward, but for their own development.

Instilling a reading habit in children is an investment that positively affects their entire lives. With the support of parents, educators, and society, instilling a reading habit in children at an early age will make them more successful and conscious individuals in the future. Children who grow up surrounded by books become individuals who can see the world from a broader perspective, think, and question. As parents and educators, please let us make some effort in this regard and, first and foremost, set an example for our children by reading books ourselves!
