'Germany's Turkey' or 'Turkey's Germany'?

How will Turkey get through this month? Is it an unnecessary display of zeal to recall once again on this May 19th that May is an important month for Turkey, or to mention that May 27th is approaching?

We are going to talk about two countries that are interdependent and, in fact, resemble each other. One is a hegemon...

Let us ask: Are you looking for a basis for the intensity of relations between Germany and Turkey and the intertwined development of these two largest political units in Western Eurasia? Or perhaps for the fact that this is a "unique" relationship that cannot be compared to the US or any other country/state?

If you are not looking at the news in the economic press about foreign trade figures between the two countries breaking a new record in 2025, and if you are not paying attention to population movements, it might be enlightening to take a look at the extensive report published in the Bild newspaper on Sunday: This largest newspaper in Germany drew attention to the activities of the Dalton gang in Berlin and noted how reckless they are, to the point where German prosecutors have even placed a bounty on their heads.

What do we mean?

This: The relationship between developments in these two countries is so intense that it cannot be compared to others.

In fact, it is like this: Within the world system and in Europe, Turkey is primarily under Germany's purview. Moreover, this has been on an upward trend since the late 1970s.

GERMANY OR THE US? BOTH, BUT...

Therefore, it should not be considered an exaggeration to argue that German-based capital determines Turkey's capitalism and technology. If one wants to be more precise, it is also possible to say that the capital and power combinations of European Germany influence (or even determine) the power relations in Turkey to one degree or another. Of course, while remembering that the US is inherent in this network of relations...

Germany has a significant weight in the Turkish economy.

But Turkey also contains another power in reverse: Beyond being a large market and investment area for German companies, it should not be considered an exaggeration to say that there is a population "affiliated" with Turkey in Germany of probably over 5 million, when considering official figures of 3 million, but also unofficial figures and a broad base. The Turkey-linked population is influential. It is possible to speak of such a powerful community not only because of those who hold Turkish passports and those who have acquired German citizenship, but also because of the kinship ties such as the families and children they have established in this country.

If this weight did not exist, such reckless mafia relations would not occur in Berlin. They must have a base.

It is inconceivable that Berlin does not see this. Such a population density could upset all balances. Because there are other "foreign" communities as well. Primarily those of Russian origin... Approximately 30 percent of the population in Germany has a migration background.

These "outsiders" will need to be managed in some way. It is essential to make some investments to prevent the aforementioned "foreign-origin" people, and of course primarily the population of Turkish origin, from developing common patterns of behavior. These are investments in every field...

Let us look at ourselves: In fact, it should be considered normal to encounter discourses that propagate that they have nothing in common, that they were at each other's throats even in Republican Turkey, and that Republican Turkey is already an "anomaly." It will be necessary to "atomize" this population of Turkish origin, or at least distance them from each other, not just in politics, but in various layers of daily life and, of course, in cultural and artistic life. Those who do not sow hostility may eventually fall under the sway of these communities. There are many who think this way. We cannot say that these fears have disappeared.

It is not exactly absurd to say that there are concrete divisive projects for these types of immigrant-origin people in certain drawers.

IS THE "ATATÜRK OPERA" A COINCIDENCE?

The "Atatürk Opera" analysis, which was published for the first time in Turkish on this site yesterday, and the ensuing controversy are just one example.

So, these are just one side of the coin.

What is important is to remind that political developments in the two countries have a direct impact on each other.

The Islamist government in Turkey is not using military violence, but judicial violence. There is indeed a judicial coup in progress. We might even think that this is a "unique" contribution to the European right/reactionary movement. Well, has anyone heard or seen Berlin issue any "truly effective" warning or take any measures regarding these lawless acts? We are not talking about ineffective statements that could be called going through the motions.

They resemble each other, we said...

The government in Germany could fall at any moment. Those who think that the country's largest party, the fascistic AfD (Alternative for Germany), will soon increase its vote share to exceed the 30 percent band have already begun to discuss that the classic right (CDU/CSU) and this new radical right could form a coalition government. The number of those who want this, that is, those who say "Do not build a firewall against the AfD! Let there be cooperation!" is rapidly increasing in political circles...

Ultimately, there is no big difference between the AfD and this "Trump mindset." An AfD government will not do anything it says, and will not say anything it does... Besides its hostility toward immigrants and its pressure for energy imports from Russia, it is no different from the German right, including the social democrats.

But despite this, all balances will be turned upside down.

The law of communicating vessels is perhaps something like this: If turmoil breaks out in Turkey, Germany is shaken; if balances are upset in Germany, Turkey is also shaken. But Turkey is shaken more...
