The shadow that will fall from Europe onto Turkey

The shadow of all calculations and decisions will inevitably fall upon Turkey—or more accurately, the region's most important "key country"; this is certain. Granted, we can add Iran to this fate as well.

Let us take our cue from the recent Davos meeting, which was the scene of surprising debates. However, there is a backstory as well.

Perhaps a statement made by German politician Friedrich Merz—who declared last year that they would "build Europe's most powerful conventional army" and who slipped a remark into a speech before business leaders in the eastern German city of Halle in January—clarifies what we mean: "Russia is a European country." ("Russland ist ein europäisches Land.")

This expression was treated as a "great transformation," especially in financial industry publications: Was Berlin changing its stance on the Ukraine issue as well? However, the German "democratic mainstream media," which is no different from A Haber in Turkey and perhaps even surpasses it in "bias," chose to treat this stance with a bit more nuance.

This sentence, "slipped in while passing" toward the end of a long assessment, likely caused major repercussions among those in power, even if it was not reflected outwardly. It was likely the result of serious friction within the business world as much as the political class. It could also be argued that it was a response to Donald Trump's policies of tightening the reins on—and even openly pushing around—the US's vassals in Europe.

Something, some balances, are undoubtedly changing.

But we remember something else: When considered alongside Merz's frightening ("adding fuel to the fire") stance and statements regarding the war in Ukraine in previous months, a strange picture emerges. Friedrich Merz, who is insistent on transferring the billions sitting in frozen accounts belonging to the Russian state in European banks to Ukraine so that it can fight, was now, after underlining that they are determined to "build Europe's most powerful conventional army" in Germany, reminding everyone that Russia is a European country.

These are not expressions that will remain only in Europe.

Old friends, new adversaries in the new climate

The reaction of Mark Carney in Davos should be considered within this climate. Carney is part of the world's liberal elite, and there is no doubt about his right-wing leanings. But his emphasis on the fact that the world is no longer the old world, that everything needs to be re-evaluated, his search for new alliances, and his posturing as if positioning himself against the US do not only concern American pressure in the Western Hemisphere. They also concern our parts of the world. These confrontations will ultimately take place in our geography in particular, and likely with much sharper lines at that.

If Turkey is the key country in Eurasia and the Middle East, they must destroy that key. They need to do this to protect US or EU interests. We will return to this.

We mentioned Davos and Carney. As the world left over from socialism enters a time where, as Russian nationalist Alexander Dugin wrote in a recent article, everyone is fighting/will fight everyone else, major conflicts between old allies should surprise no one. Mark Carney, for instance, does not hide that they are looking for ways to open up to China. The EU is signing a special agreement with India. Berlin is holding meetings in Qatar to get rid of its dependence on American gas. A deputy from Merz's party, David Preisendanz, writes that Germany must establish itself as the "central leading power of Europe," not only politically and economically but also militarily. A lot is happening.

We cannot easily make sense of these. Because the stage is now very cluttered. Traces and interests, and therefore alliances and enmities, have become intertwined. Those in power are forced to conduct politics by stepping on each other's toes. It has been a long time since the order after the Second World War faded into history. It seems the great walls are only now truly coming down.

Open-ended questions: Uncertainty is growing

The shadow of all these frictions, diverging paths, and new quests will inevitably fall upon Turkey.

We will come to this. But what is important are the armament calculations that will severely shake Germany's budget items. We are talking about a hegemon determined to allocate 5 percent of its national income—or rather, its GDP—to armament or militarization, which is disguised as "defense."

There is also a Germany on the scene that is making a move in the production of drones or UAVs/UCAVs, which the Turkish elite are currently boasting about. In other words, Turkish reactionaries should not think they will develop by selling UCAVs, etc. They won't let them...

However, let us return to the initial question: When this most powerful conventional army of Europe is established—and they are step-by-step militarizing not only the economy but also society—will it include Russia? Or, as has always been expressed, is a violence being constructed against the Russian threat and to surpass it? Is there a confrontation on the horizon that will turn into a hot conflict? Can they do it?

The answers to these questions are currently open-ended.

However, the political-economic quests in Europe and its leading country, Germany, will not end. All constants are changing, variables are disappearing. It is becoming almost impossible to recognize the equations.

All the results of the Second World War have been canceled. There are confrontations reminiscent of 1913-14. We said a shadow. The painful question is: Will Turkey and Iran take the place of the Ottoman Empire 110 years later?

We will look at these.

In a world purged of socialism, a "transcendent left" that can produce politics as if "surfing" on tsunamis must make its weight felt on the stage.

Otherwise, in this new feast of wolves, we may find not only our countries but our humanity shattered to pieces.
