Happy December 5th World Engineers Day

Happy belated “World Engineers Day.”

On this occasion, let us write down the words of one of the greatest statesmen of the last century, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, for engineers.

“The light that illuminates the future of the Republic shines on the foreheads of Turkish engineers.”

Since I started writing, I have been diving into and emerging from various topics. My boss at 12Punto, Mustafa Büyüksipahi, doesn't interfere much with my articles, but since he interferes with the timing, you will be reading this piece I wrote for the December 5th “World Engineers Day” on Sunday, December 10th.

As a Civil Engineer, I tried to write a nice Sunday article for both engineers and you.

I do not want it to be a formal, perfunctory piece.

Let's start and see what kind of narrative it will be, where we will go and come back in these next 3-4 hours,

Also, there is the fermentation period of the article.

That takes a bit more time.

When we get carried away by excitement and lose ourselves, the process of softening the dangerous sentences we write is also a reality of our day that takes some time.

The world witnessed great wars in the last century.

Besides the two World Wars, let us not forget the Cold War, which lasted much longer than its heat.

Empires dissolved and collapsed.

People had to leave their ancient homelands where they were born.

Great migrations occurred.

Borders were redrawn.

New states were established.

Many leaders came and went during this process.

Two of those whose names are still remembered with respect, love, and reverence today are Abraham Lincoln and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Their doctrines shed light on their nations.

Their statues are still standing, and they are remembered by their nations with respect and longing.

Despite all the efforts to wear it down by countries called friends and allies, “Atatürk’s Turkey” continues to live as an integrated part of the civilized world,

or in the foreign tongue,

“La Turquie Kemaliste.”

To those friends who insult and smear Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who is recognized by the whole world as the Commander and statesman of the century, who call him a fascist, and who ignore the achievements of Modern Turkey for the sake of their tiny interests,

and who put the great Atatürk, who founded modern Turkey and elevated its people, in the same category as fascists like Mussolini, Hitler, and Franco, who devastated their countries, regions, and people.

You can reach the names of these friends if you type “deepen Ergenekon” into Google.

You will even see the name of the Priest of Tuzluçayır.

Despite the machinations, coups, and turmoil caused by such names, Modern Turkey managed to dock the ship at the harbor with minimal damage, especially through the efforts and contributions of its engineers.

It can be said that the more than 50 dams built by the late Civil Engineer Demirel in the 1960s provided relative relief to Turkey despite the energy crisis in the world.

During periods of scarcity, when there were queues for basic necessities like oil, cigarettes, and gas canisters, even though there were interruptions, there was a possibility to catch one's breath in terms of electricity.

Since we mentioned dams, let's take a look at why engineers build dams and what a dam is for!

A dam is a structural system that uses water collected behind a barrier built in front of a river for the benefit of society using engineering principles.

After the dam is built, the water accumulated in the dam reservoir during rainy periods is used for both personal and agricultural purposes during dry periods.

The only reason we experienced almost no water shortages in our country despite the past summer being extremely rainless and arid is the dams.

The water in our taps has never been cut off thanks to the water stored in dams during rainy periods.

The situation was the same in agricultural irrigation.

We provided access to “water” for 365 days and 6 hours.

On the other hand, the water raised by being stored in the dam's reservoir is dropped onto turbine blades from the top level of the dam, converting the water's “Potential Energy” into “Electrical Energy.”

The dam organizes our industry and social life by converting the potential energy of water into “Electrical Energy” using entirely domestic means and free resources.

It creates a society that goes out into the street after taking a daily shower.

It creates a clean generation with brushed teeth.

It creates a civilized-looking society with washed, cleaned, and ironed clothes.

Our vegetables and fruits washed with uninterrupted flowing water ensure we eat healthier and more hygienically.

Consequently, our Gross National Product increases.

Besides this, fish farming is carried out in the lake accumulated in the dam reservoir, and the citizen's food and protein needs are met.

It also has significant contributions to tourism and the climate.

There are many more examples.

Engineers put us in a box with the plane they designed, take us thousands of meters up, and land us at an airport thousands of kilometers away almost flawlessly.

This operation is performed using the plane designed by Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and the airport designed by Civil Engineers and Architects.

The engineer is also the one who operates the combi boiler in Istanbul and the robot arms of the car factory in Germany with gas coming from the Gobi desert 10 thousand kilometers away.

Engineers are also the ones who make mobile phones, computers, televisions, high-speed trains, highways, printers, bridges, natural gas combined cycle power plants, high-rise buildings, sewage and drinking water lines, natural gas pipelines, and ports.

And so much more.

All these things are projects that engineers have racked their brains to design.

Of course, the origin of these developments largely rests with the scientists who led to the industrial revolutions.

The book “Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy” published by English Physicist and Mathematician Isaac Newton in 1687 is considered one of the most important scientific books in world history.

Leonardo da Vinci, born in 1452,

Copernicus, born in 1473,

Galileo, born in 1564,

Kepler, born in 1571.

They are among the leading scientists who contributed to Europe reaching the “consistency” stage, which is the “Reform” period of the Industrial Revolutions.

1792, Samuel Morse and the telegraph

1809, Charles Darwin, nature and history

These names are also among the leading scientists who enabled the Industrial Revolution to pass to the “yield limit,” which is the “Renaissance” period, between 1730 and 1850.

The industrial revolution began in England with iron production and the steam engine.

1st Industrial Revolution: Starts with steam-powered ships invented in the 1760s.

2nd Industrial Revolution: Known for electricity, telegraph, and radio invented between 1870-1945.

3rd Industrial Revolution: 1960-2000, defined by electronics, information technologies, and the microscope.

4th Industrial Revolution: The 2000s will be known for artificial intelligence, software, robots, smart systems, big data, the internet of things, cyber security, electron microscopes, and mobile phones.

The processes between industrial revolutions were accelerated by the wars experienced in the last century.

There are only 20 years between the First World War, which occurred in 1914, and the second. However, it is impossible to describe the difference in terms of firepower.

Technology reached the capacity to take off from Germany in 1939 and bomb England, from the planes called “pır pır” (propeller planes) that had very low speed and range in the 1914 war.

While a computer produced in the 1960s, which was so expensive that only state institutions could buy it, barely fit into a huge room, it shrank and became cheap enough to fit on a desk in the 1990s, on a lap in the 2000s, and now into tablets.

The decreasing production costs after engineers succeeded in switching to mass production with mechanization provided people with easier access to the products they needed.

Cars, which used to be one or two in a whole neighborhood, are now in almost every home.

Rich or poor, every house is full of kitchen appliances.

Clothes no longer fit in closets.

All these processes were not as easy as they are written, of course.

Humanity lived for a very long time like in Çatalhöyük or Göbeklitepe.

They killed each other with swords and shields.

They produced by hand.

Travel was limited.

13th and 14th-century period films like Kara Murat and Battal Gazi by Master Actor Cüneyt Arkın and Braveheart by Mel Gibson explain the subject more visibly.

The traditional lifestyles and social relations of societies did not undergo an evolution for a long time, like thousands of years.

The breaking point was the Second World War, which had very high firepower. When men went to the front, women started working in arms factories.

They both raised their children and worked shifts morning and night.

When more than 50 million men died in the Second World War, the advancing production capacities of the factories due to the war prevented women from returning home.

Women were already used to working outside anyway.

A work environment that was not much heavier than the one at home, and also insured and unionized.

They are also getting paid on top of it.

It doesn't get better than this,

Why should they return home,

All the work at home is also done by the woman, but there is neither insurance nor a salary.

And on top of that, the scolding about why the soup isn't hot.

German engineers came to the rescue of women who resisted returning home, to housework, and to traditional duties.

The engineering inventions of German engineers that made the lives of working women easier were also recorded in history as an indication that the point of no return had been reached.

Ready-made baby diapers, personal hygienic care products, baby formulas with higher protein, ready-made clothes, life-facilitating home appliances like washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers, kitchen appliances, and ready-made meals.

There is no turning back now.

Engineers, who also saved the lives of women,

Were a model that possessed analytical thinking skills,

Creative intelligence,

The ability to produce practical solutions,

And an interest in mathematics and physics.

The woman, whose life was made easier by the inventions of engineers, was freed from the dominance of men and moved from the traditional woman model waiting for instructions to the role of a human being who produces.

The engineer, who moves ships of thousands of gross tons using the buoyancy of water,

Opened the Panama Canal, shortened the ship route by 13 thousand kilometers, and raised the ships up to 28 meters above sea level in the canal.

Engineers,

Invented today's information technologies, which we saw in films like the American-made “Star Trek” in the 1980s, where “Mr. Spock” made video calls, which tied us all to a single-channel screen.

Jets at the speed of light.

Vehicles launched from Earth into space that settled into orbit and remained in space for years to transfer information with the energy of the orbit,

The historical process, which experienced almost millimeter-level progress in 10 thousand years, had only just reached the “yield limit” from the “consistency limit,” and the whole story changed in 250 years.

Developments in the field of health,

In vitro fertilization,

Angiography,

Staying young,

Organ transplantation,

Microsurgery,

Eye treatment,

Developments in the field of agriculture,

With mechanization,

Soilless agriculture,

Logarithmic growth in production,

Smart bombs,

Ballistic missiles,

Nuclear warheads,

Invisibility cloaks,

Radar,

Nano Technology,

Then the developments in information technologies.

Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Amazon's Bezos, Elon Musk, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, and similar applications like LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Twitter, Gmail, Hotmail, and YouTube,

All of these surpassed the stock market values of 150-year-old energy companies with the companies they founded in their garages in the 1990s.

Now, with the ENERGY REVOLUTION, engineers are preparing to give the world a new direction.

Let's wait and see what kind of evolutionary process ENGINEERS are preparing for us.

Girls who count engineers as a reason for preference when getting married because of all these advancements they have made available to humanity in a very short time,

Why don't bosses think like you and look for engineers to work for minimum wage?
