A STONE IS HEAVY IN ITS PLACE-143. LET US NOT FORGET, LET US NOT LET BE FORGOTTEN
The foundation of justice lies in distinguishing between the rightful and the wrongful, the true and the false, the real and the unreal in society.
Although the methods of ensuring justice in the public sphere and those authorized to provide it vary from country to country, depending on social and political circumstances, there has always been a concept of and a demand for justice in the consciousness of humanity.
Without justice, a sustainable social life is not possible in the world.
Humanity realized this in very early ages.
Justice develops within the framework of common positive values where people meet.
The greatest injustice regarding cultural assets in the world is the smuggling, removal, and exhibition of historical artifacts in other countries after they have been torn from their homelands.
That is why "A stone is heavy in its place."
That is why individual, local, and social peace is achieved when "the stones fall into place."
Humanity has been striving for centuries to ensure universal justice.
In this context, for justice to be served, historical artifacts located in foreign countries must be immediately returned to the places where they were produced, to their homelands.
There are efforts in this direction all over the world.
In 1964, at the "2nd Congress of Architects and Specialists of Historic Buildings" held in Venice, a very important international decision was made with the "Venice Charter," prepared for the protection of historical artifacts and historical sites.
Article 7 of this charter stated: "A monument is an inseparable part of the environment in which the history it bears is located. The removal of all or part of a monument should not be permitted except where the safeguarding of such monument demands it, or where it is justified by national or international interests of great importance."
The following year, in 1965, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) established an organization called ICOMOS, the "International Council on Monuments and Sites," for the implementation and protection of this charter.
ICOMOS, which is headquartered in Paris today, has over 7,500 members who are experts in their fields, including architects, archaeologists, urban planners, engineers, art historians, and artists.
Subsequently, in 1970, UNESCO opened for signature the "1970 Convention" on the measures to be taken to prohibit and prevent the illicit import, export, and transfer of ownership of cultural property.
In 2019, 140 countries had signed this agreement, and by 2023, the number reached 195.
Meetings were held in Paris in 2000 and 2018, and in Rome in 2019, under the initiative of UNESCO to fulfill the requirements of these conventions, which were created to protect historical artifacts and prevent the smuggling of cultural assets out of the countries where they were made.
It is clear from all this that the world is informed about "historical artifact smuggling and historical artifacts located outside the countries where they were produced" and is taking decisions regarding this.
Consciences are open to the return of these artifacts.
There are international conventions.
So, why are the "eyes blind and ears deaf" of some regarding the injustice of the Pergamon Altar of Zeus and the historical artifacts of Bergama, and the historical values of Anatolia that have been taken abroad, being there?
Moreover, Bergama is on the "World Heritage" list as the 999th site of UNESCO, the very organization that is the owner of all these developments.
Where is human justice!
Where is the marble frieze bearing the sorrowful expression of the giant Ephialtes, who fought against Apollo, the god of light, on the eastern facade of the Pergamon Altar of Zeus?
Where is civilization!
Justice is tyranny for those who impose injustices, and "the most beautiful face of humanity" for those who want a peaceful world and strive to create it.
A "social festival" is the day when justice is realized in every field.
THE ALTAR OF ZEUS AND THE BERGAMA ARTIFACTS DO NOT BELONG TO COLD AND FOGGY BERLIN, BUT TO BEAUTIFUL BERGAMA. THEY MUST ABSOLUTELY BE RETURNED, THEY MUST RETURN HOME!
