The people of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will head to the polls on Sunday, October 19, for the Presidential election. The candidate who receives 50+1 percent of the vote in the first round will win. If an absolute majority is not achieved, the two candidates with the most votes will compete in a second round. The candidate who receives the most votes in this round will be elected President and will serve a 5-year term...
It appears that the election, in which 8 candidates will compete, will be a race between the incumbent President and independent presidential candidate Ersin Tatar and CTP leader Tufan Erhürman.
The other candidates in the election, where 218 thousand 313 voters will cast their ballots, are independents Mehmet Hasgüler, Arif Salih Kırdağ, Hüseyin Gürlek, Ahmet Boran, İbrahim Yazıcı, and the Cyprus Socialist Party candidate Osman Zorba.
TWO-STATE SOLUTION...
TRNC President Ersin Tatar states that the election is an ‘existential election,’ emphasizing that it serves as a referendum between the two-state policy and the federation solution model.
On the other hand, a critical decision was discussed in the Assembly of the Republic during this process. The ‘Draft Resolution on a Two-State Solution to the Cyprus Issue’ was accepted by majority vote in the Assembly General Assembly on October 14. The opposition CTP did not participate in the vote!
The resolution serves as a roadmap for the international recognition of the TRNC and its membership in the Organization of Turkic States.
The resolution calls for efforts to lift the unfair political, economic, and social isolation imposed on the TRNC; accelerating efforts for the international recognition and promotion of the TRNC; and explaining to the international community that a ‘Two-State’ consensus constitutes the basis for real and lasting peace in Cyprus.
The Assembly of the Republic's resolution emphasizes that the TRNC can reach these goals as soon as possible if it engages in close cooperation with the Motherland, Turkey.
In the context of priority goals for the Turkish Cypriot people, full membership in the Organization of Turkic States and its affiliated institutions under its constitutional name, with the support of all brotherly states, is also included.
The resolution also draws attention to the emphasis that a new negotiation process will only be possible if the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people are registered by the UN for the signing of an agreement that will ensure the cooperation of the two states.
The text also clearly sets out its domestic and foreign policy line by emphasizing that it will proceed in accordance with Atatürk’s principle of ‘Peace at home, peace in the world’ and his statement, ‘Independence is my character.’
Erkut Şahali, Secretary General of the opposition CTP, described the “two-state solution” resolution as an election ploy (!)
BEYOND AN ELECTION…
Sunday, October 19, is a very important date not only for the TRNC but also for Turkey, the Eastern Mediterranean, and our region. It is much more than just the election of the TRNC President…
To be strong in the Eastern Mediterranean, one must protect Cyprus. The existence of the TRNC on the island is of critical value in historical, political, geopolitical, and strategic terms.
A great duty falls upon the Turkish Cypriot people, not only for the security and future of Turkey but for the entire region...
