The issue that has been ongoing between Palestine and Israel for over 70 years has continued through different periods and with varying degrees of war and conflict. It is said that history is lived forward but understood backward... The Palestine-Israel war is not an issue that emerged suddenly, from one day to the next.
It would be wrong to react to the current state of war, which has reached a new dimension with the attack Hamas named "Al-Aqsa Flood," as if it were happening for the first time and were independent of the historical process.
The Palestinian people's struggle for independence and freedom took its place on the agenda in the 1960s and 70s alongside the rising revolutionary wave in the world and in Turkey.
The resistance organization PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) led by Yasser Arafat and its largest component Fatah, as well as progressive and secular movements such as the PFLP led by George Habash and the DFLP led by Nayef Hawatmeh, were the dynamo of the Palestinian struggle, bringing together Muslims and Christians alike.
There was broad-based social support for the resistance against US imperialism and its satellite in the region, the occupying Israel. Palestine and its struggle for independence and freedom were embraced because it was an oppressed nation.
The resistance was extremely legitimate and massive. So much so that many revolutionaries from Turkey also went to fight on the side of Palestine and lost their lives. Without any ethnic, religious, sectarian, or sub-identity affiliation, they went solely to support the resistance of the Palestinian people and all oppressed nations against imperialism and its satellite.
In those years, the Turkish right and the political Islamist wing did not follow the issue as closely as they do now, as they could not establish a political and intellectual connection with the Palestinian cause.
In the 1980s, with the US's new world order and green belt projects, faith- and sect-based radical movements were supported in the world, and especially in the Middle East, against national-based, secular, and anti-imperialist movements.
These organizations began to grow from the late 1980s and became even more active in the 90s. They carried out actions that also targeted civilians. The Palestinian war of independence, which PLO leader Arafat had fought for years and pursued at the table through international diplomacy, was being hindered by radical groups driven by revenge and hatred.
On the Israeli side, ultra-radical and right-wing movements were also growing on the basis of opposition. Israel's pro-peace, progressive, and secular elements favoring compromise were also gradually weakening. The bombing actions of radical groups that also targeted civilians diminished the legitimacy of the Palestinian resistance, caused it to lose support in world public opinion, and left the Palestinian people facing greater blockades, loss of life, and destruction...
In Israel, right-wing radical governments were becoming increasingly ruthless... It is possible to summarize the current point in this way.
The Palestinian struggle is divided today. There is a Palestinian administration led by Fatah in the West Bank and an administration led by Hamas, an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, in Gaza.
Hamas ignited the recent conflict environment. While criticizing the inhumane events and images that consciences cannot accept, it is also difficult to accept seeing Israel as an innocent figure and the "oppressed" side of this war...
If there is humanity, there must certainly be conscience and justice!
It must not be forgotten!
With the support of imperialism, the Palestinian people have been massacred for many years, regardless of whether they are children or adults, driven from their homes, thrown into dungeons, and their lives have been poisoned. Surrounded by blockades and embargoes, Palestinians are trying to live in difficult conditions in camps, in the absence of basic necessities.
Moreover, in the heart of the Middle East, in the middle of the entire Arab geography, a people is fighting for its existence.
No matter how well-intentioned, sentences starting with "But they also..." or "However, here..." do not provide a solution to the danger that more blood and tears may come to Palestine in the future.
The UN, and regional countries, especially Turkey, must urgently bring the Palestinian and Israeli sides to the table. Peace negotiations must begin, an independent Palestinian state must be recognized, and the embargo and blockade against the Palestinian people must end.
In addition to all this, Israel must withdraw from the lands it occupies! For a lasting peace, Israel's pro-violence policies must end. The oppression that Israel has inflicted on the Palestinian people for years must finally end!
