On July 2, 1993, one of the greatest crimes against humanity in history was committed in Sivas. Thirty-one years have passed. July 2 is the name of the day when 35 lives were burned alive in the Madımak Hotel by the modern-day heirs of medieval darkness... It is the name of the day when those who turned the world into hell by saying 'I will go to heaven' brought souls together with the fires of hell (!).
The people and humanity they burned will actually be their end as well. Just like Giordano Bruno, the first scientist to be burned alive... It has always been people like Bruno who have revealed and multiplied the virtue of humanity. They exist in the history of humanity...
Every July 2, the ache of a 'Menekşe' falls into my heart...
Years are passing. Matter is in motion. Everything is changing. Contradictions, everything that contains the potential to turn into its opposite, are evolving, transforming, and changing... But the pains, the aches, and the wounds, even if one tries to heal them, do not subside... Even if it diminishes, the ember in the heart does not go out...
Sivas... July 2, 1993... That dark day. I was 11 years old, I was a child. My heart burns for all the people burned on July 2. Oh, and Menekşe and Koray... Koray was 12 years old that day, his sister Menekşe was 14; they were children. They were massacred by a mob that was an enemy of humanity and enlightenment. They remained children forever...
If Menekşe were alive, she would be 45 today; Koray would be 43...
Children born on that dark day are 31 years old today. Some of them have had children of their own.
In Sivas, the place where the foundations of our Republic were laid, they were massacred by those who targeted Atatürk's principles and revolutions, the secular Republic, enlightenment, modernity, human beings, and the values of humanity with slogans like "The Republic was founded here, it will be destroyed here."
The lawyers of those who committed the arson became members of parliament, became ministers. The perpetrators did not receive the punishments they deserved. Instead of shedding light on this massacre and punishing the perpetrators, a process full of attempts to cover up the incident and exonerate the perpetrators was experienced... The relatives of the victims and the lawyers who defended them were subjected to pressure.
And the statute of limitations... Despite the objections that there is no statute of limitations for crimes against humanity, and there cannot be... We will say it tirelessly: The July 2 Sivas massacre is a crime against humanity!
Today, we are in the midst of organized evils of darkness that know no bounds. Those who carry the light of enlightenment are scattered, tired, and silent...
One light breaks the darkness. Many lights illuminate all sides. Let us disperse the atmosphere of hopelessness. Let us be many. Let us be one. Let us be in unity.
The light is in our hands...
