Pandemics are like biological milestones set by nature on humanity's path of progress. The SARS-CoV family forced us to stop, think, and face our mistakes twice, in 2003 and 2019.
However, the scientific data we have indicates that a third milestone, under the name SARS-CoV-3, could emerge in 2029. This is not a “prophecy” of nature; it is a clear result of molecular epidemiology and ecosystem analysis.
VIRAL EVOLUTION AND “QUASISPECIES” DYNAMICS
Coronaviruses evolve in multiple variant populations called “quasispecies” due to their high mutation capacity.
Each variant constantly tries to establish a balance under selection pressure through small changes in the viral genome. The N501Y mutation on the Spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 increased the virus's binding to the human ACE2 receptor by 10-fold, thereby increasing its transmissibility.
Such mutations reveal that the virus's capacity to adapt is not random, but functions like “nature's algorithm.”
The current mutation rate and natural selection pressures provide suitable conditions for the emergence of a strain we could call SARS-CoV-3 within 5-10 years.
ECOSYSTEM BALANCE: CATS, DOGS, AND UNSEEN THREATS
Cats and dogs could be potential carriers of these viruses. However, the solution lies not in blaming them, but in facing their roles within the ecosystem. Because the absence of cats and dogs shifts the viral load to species we cannot control:
Rodents: In cities without cats, mouse and rat populations increase. These creatures, thanks to their close genetic kinship with bats, rapidly carry and transform viruses.
Bats: Bats, which are nature's original “viral reservoirs,” begin to live closer to city borders as the ecological balance is disrupted.
The uniqueness of the interferon response in cats shows that their natural immunity against the virus is strong. Including them in vaccination programs allows us to build a safer ecosystem for humanity. Viruses exploit gaps when looking for a host; it is our responsibility not to create that gap.
VACCINES AND EXISTING DRUGS: THE “ABSENTS” IN THE EARLY STAGES OF PANDEMICS, WHEN THEY ARE MOST NEEDED
Although vaccines are life-saving in pandemics, they accelerate the immune escape mechanisms of viruses. Just as antibiotics trigger resistant strains in bacteria, the mutation process of SARS-CoV-2 under pressure led to the birth of more contagious and resistant variants.
The lesson to be learned here is this: Relying solely on vaccines against pandemics is no different from watching the virus corner us. The plasticity in the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase enzyme of SARS-CoV viruses shows that existing drugs will also be insufficient on their own.
The solution lies in developing multi-target antiviral drugs. A version of an effective drug like oseltamivir, used in flu pandemics, aimed at the SARS-CoV family could bring the destructiveness of the pandemic under control. However, this drug development process should not be left to the commercial mercy of companies.
INTERNATIONAL CONSORTIUM: THE SHARED RESPONSIBILITY OF GLOBAL SCIENCE
If the world does not act together against pandemics, it has no chance of winning. Vaccine and drug development processes;
Must be organized for the future of humanity, ahead of commercial interests,
An international drug consortium must be established under the leadership of the World Health Organization (WHO),
Coordinated work of all laboratories must be ensured.
These drugs should be in the strategic stockpiles of all countries and act as insurance against a pandemic. If we do not do this today, we will pay much higher prices in the pandemics of tomorrow.
THE 2029 SCENARIO: WHAT IS NATURE TELLING US?
Nature is constantly sending signals to humanity. The SARS-CoV-3 scenario is a warning for both scientists and society.
If we:
Continue to disrupt the ecosystem,
Do not understand viral evolution,
Do not strengthen vaccine and drug strategies,
nature will make its move again.
In the absence of animals we can control, such as cats and dogs, the viral load shifts to uncontrollable species. This makes the pandemic more dangerous by growing it from points we cannot detect.

CONCLUSION: INTELLIGENCE AND RESPONSIBILITY AGAINST PANDEMICS
SARS-CoV-3 may emerge in 2029. However, to reduce this possibility, we must use scientific intelligence, ecological responsibility, and international cooperation together.
Cats and dogs must be vaccinated,
Controlled antiviral drugs must be developed,
Global scientific coordination must be ensured.
Pandemics test whether humanity has learned from its mistakes. Nature sets its own rules, but solutions are often hidden within nature itself. The viral resistance of cats offers us both new strategies and reminds us how fragile the ecosystem is.
If we do not make the right moves in this game of chess, the next pandemic will not only spread faster, but will target humanity's weak points irreversibly. Throwing science and medicine into the lap of the opportunistic free market instead of viewing them within the scope of national security policy creates the most dangerous existential problem for a country and for the world globally.
Although viruses are small, their destructive effects are great. Our only security against them is the conditions provided to science and the people who work with science. In an individualized world where “everyone is responsible for their own actions,” if we could even learn a little from viruses that show an example of solidarity within themselves through cooperation in mutation sharing, we would realize that people who dig each other's graves are more dangerous than viruses.
There are no lands as fertile as those where minds that are not afraid of science and thinking and that constantly question flourish. The need of such lands for competent and conscious gardeners is as essential as water.
