Friday sermons in Turkey are now like the weather forecast… Every week we wait to see “what has been declared haram today?” This week’s sermon topic: Skirt length!
In its Friday sermon on August 1, the Diyanet (Directorate of Religious Affairs) launched a campaign to save the modesty of society under the title “Modesty: God’s Command, a Requirement of Human Nature.” Yes, not the economy, not immigration policy, not the state of education... Skirt length.
The sermon explicitly stated:
“Wearing short clothes and transparent garments is a violation of God’s command to cover up, regardless of where or for what purpose, and it is haram.”
And it continued:
“Everyone who remains silent while moral and decency standards are violated bears a great burden of sin.”
In other words, you don't even have to wear them; if you don't warn those who do, you are also hell-bound.
So, don't criticize the man pulling at the skirt of a girl who fell on the Metrobus; the real problem is the girl wearing a short skirt. In that case, Zara and H&M aren't clothing chains, they are chains of sinners, it turns out…
But the sentence in this sermon, “Everyone who remains silent while moral and decency standards are violated bears a great burden of sin,” is so dangerous that uncles slapping or harassing young people on the Metrobus is now permissible with the Diyanet’s fatwa!
The Diyanet didn't stop there. It wasn't enough; they also targeted those who get aesthetic procedures. The Diyanet sermon says:
“Changing one's body structure for the sake of being liked or out of imitation is a failure to appreciate what God has created and falling into the devil’s trap.”
So, if you’ve had a nose job, you might be tossed into the “recycling bin” at the gates of heaven. And what about tattoos? Oh my God! “You will be deprived of God’s mercy.”
Because a tattoo is not writing for an Angel, but for the Devil!
Well, what about those who share photos in bikinis on social media? A double reservation in hell for them too:
“Such images are immoral, shameless, ugly, and haram.”
One can't help but wonder... Does the Diyanet write its sermons in partnership with RTÜK?
Let’s move on to another piece of theater: The rain prayer!
Diyanet President Ali Erbaş gave instructions for rain prayers to be held in 90 thousand mosques under the pretext of hot weather. In the prayers rising from minarets before the night prayer (yatsı), mercy clouds were requested from God, and a “cloud shipment” was requested against the drought.
When did this happen? Exactly one day after the General Directorate of Meteorology’s warning of heavy rainfall lasting three days!
Citizens rightfully asked: “Was this prayer planned, or was the rain?”
In other words, an announcement was made a day in advance that “rain is coming tomorrow,” and the Diyanet took this as an opportunity to create an atmosphere of “the prayer has been answered.” Angels above must be talking, saying, “Who did this PR work?”
PREACHING VIRTUE WHILE PRACTICING VICE
And let’s get to the real issue: The Diyanet scandal in Europe.
It has been revealed that some imams serving in the Diyanet staff in Austria partied with escorts using donations collected from citizens on Fridays and holidays, recorded these as “imam expenses” in official records, and even organized trips for inspectors with this money!
Can you imagine? The imam is popping champagne in Vienna with the money you put in the charity box! He calls women, rents hotels. And he shows the receipts as “congregation expenses.” This isn't a Tarantino movie; it’s real!
Moreover, among those dismissed are relatives of a former AKP minister. What did the Diyanet do? They called it “lack of discipline” and closed the file. Remember how you said in the sermon that “remaining silent to shamelessness is a sin”? If we shouted this sermon with a megaphone in Austria, the Diyanet would be at the top of the list of sinners.
But look, Halil Konakcı hoca has come out on his X account to defend the sermon:
“Nudity is not modernity; it is primitiveness and shamelessness.”
Hoca, what do you think about the imams who rent out hotels with escort money? Are they modern or primitive?
You give sermons about skirt length, but you swallow the imam who takes the inspector on an “escort tour.” It is clear that some things are not transparent for the Diyanet; they are see-through...
Women no longer want to decide what to wear, but rather what kind of mentality they are being governed by. Young people don't want to go to the mosque, they want to go to other countries. And society is no longer afraid of you; it is ashamed of you!
If you are going to give a morality lesson every week, first wash and purify this pulpit. Then maybe one day your credibility will be washed clean too.
The foundations you support are caught in alcohol raids. Your imams run to escorts. Your staff member tasked with sending people to Hajj is caught with bribe money. Your luxury vehicles and expenses are endless, but if you ask, those who wear skirts or get tattoos are hell-bound!
Are you aware that there are millions who do not want to share the same heaven as you?
