I am not going to do a match analysis…
Our boys went out, played their game, and brought joy to our people with a great victory. Even if only for a short while, they made us forget our troubles, worries, and the struggle to make ends meet.
There is another issue that caught my attention.
I looked at the stands yesterday…
Before the match, during the match, after the match…
They were almost entirely made up of our expatriates!
The lucky group that could travel to Germany for the tournament consists of either the very wealthy, fans taken there by sponsors, or privileged individuals on the federation's list.
Excluding the young expatriates, the average age of the fans is around 50-60…
In other words, there are no young people from Turkey who can go to watch the match and experience this atmosphere.
How could there be?
Those trying to live on minimum wage certainly cannot go, and getting a Schengen visa is impossible anyway. Even applications are closed. Should we count the recent price hikes, the exorbitant increase in international departure fees, or what else?
I watched the show the Dutch fans put on while heading to the match; they were having a wonderful time. If two friends from England were to go to Germany for two days to experience the atmosphere there and return, the total money they would spend would not even reach their monthly earnings. Let's say a young person from Turkey, despite all the negativity, managed to get a visa and went to the tournament in Germany.
How many years of work do you think they would have to pay off that cost?
That is exactly why I do not feel sorry for the retirees who, while missing teeth and waiting in pension queues in their old clothes, stand in bread queues saying, "The economy will improve, this is a game by foreign powers, the Ottoman spirit is returning, once we start processing boron mines, no one can stop us."
I feel sorry for our young people who, while their peers watch such an important social event in person, have to stay home because they are worried about the bill they would have to pay if they watched the matches at a cafe...
